Thomas Charles Ellis (1904 – 1995) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s. Background Ellis was born at Balmain South in 1904. Playing career Ellis went on to come one of the finest players ever to represent the Newtown club. A Marrickville junior, Ellis played 11 seasons for Newtown between 1923-1933. He retired after winning the 1933 Grand Final, playing fullback in the Newtown Jets premiership team. A prolific goal kicker, Tom Ellis scored over 500 points in his 144 grade career at Newtown. St George Dragons
The St. George Dragons is an Australian rugby league football club from St George District in Sydney, New South Wales that played in the top level New South Wales competition and Australian Rugby League competitions from the 1921 until the 1997 ARL season, as well as the unified 1998 National Rugby League season. On 23 September 1998, the club formed a joint venture with the Illawarra Steelers, creating the St. George Illawarra Dragons team which competed in the 1999 NRL season and continues to compete in the league today. As a stand-alone club, it fields teams in the NSWRL underage men's and women's competitions, Harold Matthews Cup, S.G. Ball, and Tarsha Gale Cup. 1933 NSWRFL Season
The 1933 NSWRFL season was the twenty-sixth season of Sydney’s professional rugby league club competition, Australia’s first. Eight teams from across the city contested the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership during the season, which lasted from April until September, and culminated in Newtown’s victory over St. George in the final. Season summary When the Kangaroos sailed for England in July, the NSWRFL premiership, with a mere five rounds completed, was turned on its head. After losing the opening four matches of the season, last-placed Newtown won eleven of their next twelve matches to take the premiership, whilst Wests, who had won four and drawn one of six games, lost several key players and did not win another match.
