Keith Anderson (runner)
Keith Anderson (born 10 August 1957) is a male British former runner who was the national fell running champion and competed in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games. Athletics career Anderson did not take up running until he was thirty, at which time he was overweight and had an unhealthy lifestyle. He made rapid progress and in 1989 won the Edale Skyline, Sedbergh Hills and Three Shires fell races. Also that year, he won the Ben Nevis Race, noting that losing three stones in weight had contributed greatly to his victory. In 1991, Anderson won the British Fell Running Championships. He is popularly considered one of the best descenders in the history of the sport and an investigation of downhill running speeds found his sustained descent rate of 1.365 m/s in the 1990 Pen y Fan Race, when he descended 580m vertically in 7:05, to be the fastest recorded in any race for which relevant information was available. Fell Running
Fell running, also sometimes known as hill running, is the sport of running and racing, off-road, over upland country where the gradient climbed is a significant component of the difficulty. The name arises from the origins of the English sport on the fells of northern Britain, especially those in the Lake District. It has elements of trail running, cross country and mountain running, but is also distinct from those disciplines. Fell races are organised on the premise that contenders possess mountain navigation skills and carry adequate survival equipment as prescribed by the organiser. Fell running has common characteristics with cross-country running, but is distinguished by steeper gradients and upland country. Sedbergh Hills Fell Race
The Sedbergh Hills Fell Race is an annual fell running race in Cumbria, England. The race starts and finishes in Sedbergh and has a distance of approximately 22.5km and contains 1830m of ascent. It is usually run in August. The inaugural event was held in 1979. The ladies' race was held over a shorter course that year, but subsequently the women ran the same route as the men. In its early years, the race was organised by Mike Walford on behalf of Kendal Athletic Club. Course From Sedbergh the course makes a clockwise loop. It initially heads up to Arant Haw (605m) and then to Castley Knotts. Then around Brown Moor, Fell Head and Hazelgill Knott. The 1998 Commonwealth Games ''(Malay: Sukan Komanwel 1998)'', officially known as the XVI Commonwealth Games ''(Malay: Sukan Komanwel ke-16)'', was a multi-sport event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Marathon
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of , usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions.
