Keevil Daly
Keevil Daly (21 December 1923 – 28 June 2011) was a male Olympic weightlifting, weightlifter, who competed in the light heavyweight and middle heavyweight class and who represented British Guiana, and later Canada, at international competitions. He won the silver medal at the 1947 World Weightlifting Championships in the 82.5 kg category. As a merchant marine, he survived being torpedoed during World War II on the Canadian ship SS Lady Nelson. After the war, Daly became the first black graduate of Ryerson University, Ryerson Polytechnical as a Royal Canadian Air Force serviceman. Georgetown is the capital (political), capital and largest city of Guyana. It is situated in Demerara-Mahaica, region 4, on the Atlantic Ocean coast, at the mouth of the Demerara River. Olympic weightlifting, or Olympic-style weightlifting (officially named Weightlifting), is a sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with each athlete trying to successfully lift the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead: these are the snatch and the clean and jerk. The ''snatch'' is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. The ''clean and jerk'' is a combination lift, in which the weight is first taken from the ground to the front of the shoulders (the clean), and then from the shoulders to overhead (the jerk).
