Keefton, Oklahoma
Keefton (also known as Keefeton) is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The community is on U.S. Route 64 in Oklahoma, U.S. Highway 64, south of downtown Muskogee, Oklahoma, Muskogee. On May 23, 1973 an F4 tornado hit Keefeton directly, obliterating 75% of the town. The tornado traveled in a SW to NE direction, with 5 deaths—4 of which were in a pickup truck that was rolled for approximately 1/2 mile. A tornado measuring EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale struck near Keefeton on May 15, 2020. Muskogee, Oklahoma
Muskogee () is the thirteenth-largest city in Oklahoma and the county seat of Muskogee County. Home to Bacone College, it lies approximately southeast of Tulsa. The population of the city was 36,878 as of the 2020 census, a 6.0 percent decrease from 39,223 in 2010. History French fur traders were believed to have established a temporary village near the future Muskogee in 1806, but the first permanent European-American settlement was established in 1817 on the south bank of the Verdigris River, north of present-day Muskogee. After the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 under President Andrew Jackson, the Muscogee Creek Indians were one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" forced out of the American Southeast to Indian Territory. The Enhanced Fujita scale (abbreviated as EF-Scale) rates tornado intensity based on the severity of the damage they cause. It is used in some countries, including the United States, Canada, China, and Mongolia. The Enhanced Fujita scale replaced the decommissioned Fujita scale that was introduced in 1971 by Ted Fujita.
