Kedzie (Metra Station)
Kedzie is a Metra commuter railroad station in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. It is served by the Union Pacific West Line. The station is at North Kedzie Avenue and West Carroll Avenue in an industrial and low-income residential neighborhood. The Chicago Transit Authority's elevated Kedzie station is on West Lake Street, about three blocks to the south. The Garfield Park Conservatory is nearby, and Westinghouse High School is just north of the station. The Union Pacific's California Avenue yard, where Metra coaches for the Union Pacific lines are stored during the day, is just to the east. As of February 16, 2024, Kedzie is served by 35 trains (18 inbound and 17 outbound) on weekdays. Union Pacific West Line
The Union Pacific West Line (UP-W) is a Metra commuter rail line operated by Union Pacific Railroad in Chicago, Illinois and its western suburbs. Metra does not refer to its lines by particular colors, but the timetable accents for the Union Pacific West line are " Kate Shelley Rose" pink, honoring an Iowa woman who saved a Chicago & North Western Railway train from disaster in 1881. Green and yellow were already selected for the Union Pacific North Line and Union Pacific Northwest Line, respectively, so pink was chosen for this line. Therefore, the UP-W is the only Metra line that uses a color to honor a person instead of a fallen flag railroad. Garfield Park Conservatory, located in Garfield Park in Chicago, is one of the largest greenhouse conservatories in the United States. Often referred to as "landscape art under glass", the Garfield Park Conservatory occupies approximately inside and out and contains a number of permanent plant exhibits incorporating specimens from around the world, including some cycads that are over 200 years old. Kedzie is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Green Line and the East Garfield Park neighborhood. It opened in March 1894, and is three blocks south of Metra's Kedzie station on the Union Pacific West Line. It is also near the Chicago Center for Green Technology. Station Layout The station consists of two side platforms. There is only one entrance to the station, adjacent to the eastbound platform. Access to the westbound platform is provided by a bridge over the platforms. However, each platform does have its own exit-only staircase.
