West Virginia Route 480
West Virginia Route 480 (WV 480) is a state highway in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Known for most of its length as Kearneysville Pike, the highway extends from WV 115 in Kearneysville north to the Maryland state line at the Potomac River in Shepherdstown, from where the highway continues as Maryland Route 34 (MD 34). The route is one of the main north–south highways of northern Jefferson County and passes through the campus of Shepherd University. WV 480 was originally established in the early 1920s as West Virginia Route 48. The highway was paved in the mid-1920s, which included a different routing through Shepherdstown. WV 48's present routing through the town was established in the late 1930s when the first James Rumsey Bridge was completed; that bridge was replaced with the current bridge in the mid-2000s. Traveller's Rest (Kearneysville, West Virginia)
Traveller's Rest, also known as the General Horatio Gates Home, is an historic plantation house located on Bowers Road near Kearneysville, Jefferson County, West Virginia. Built in 1773 and enlarged a few years later, it was the home of Continental Army General Horatio Gates from 1773 until 1790. The house is very little altered from that period, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1972. The house is located on private property, and is not normally open to the public. Description Traveller's Rest is located in a rural setting west of Kearneysville, on more than of land which Bowers Road (County Road 1/1) runs through in an east–west direction. The main house, a -story stone structure, is set well back on the north side of the road. Elmwood-on-the-Opequon is a farmstead near Kearneysville, West Virginia. The farm complex exemplifies the evolution of a prosperous West Virginia farmstead through the 19th and 20th centuries. The house has expanded around an original log cabin, gradually expanding with major expansions in the 20th century. With Description The main house began in 1830 as a log house, evolving through additions to a rambling stuccoed farmhouse. The 1830 log cabin was a 1-story or -story single-pen structure. This was raised to two stories with a two-story wood-frame addition, with the original chimney becoming an interior chimney. In 1906, the house was greatly expanded by a two-story addition, built at a 90-degree angle to the original house, and incorporating an earlier free-standing log kitchen. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States, with its first section opening in 1830.
