Kayak, Alaska
Kayak Island, (Eyak: ''Qe'yiłteh'') which includes the Bering Expedition Landing Site, is located in the Gulf of Alaska, SE of Cordova, Alaska Malaspina Coastal Plain, on the eastern edge of Chugach National Forest. It has a land area of and no population. A brief visit by the Bering Expedition's German naturalist George Steller is among the first contributions to the West's knowledge of the natural and human history of the region. The island was named "Kayak" in 1826 by Lt. Sarychev of the Russian Navy, because of the fancied resemblance of its outline to the Eskimo skin canoe. Captain James Cook visited the island on May 12, 1778, and buried a bottle with a paper and two small pieces of silver given to him by Dr. Richard Kaye, the chaplain of King George III, for this purpose. Eyak Language
Eyak was a Na-Dené language, historically spoken by the Eyak people, indigenous to south-central Alaska, near the mouth of the Copper River. The name Eyak comes from a Chugach Sugpiaq name (''Igya'aq'') for an Eyak village at the mouth of the Eyak River.Michael E. Ignacio De Arteaga Y Bazán
Ignacio de Arteaga y Bazán (17 February 1731 – 1783) was an officer of the Spanish Navy. Biography He was born in Aracena, Andalusia. His paternal Basque family 'Arteaga' made it possible for Arteaga to join the naval academy at Cádiz. He was accepted as a ''guardiamarina'' (midshipman) in 1747 and upon graduation in 1754 was given the rank of ''alférez de fragata'' (ensign). After serving on various ships and in various places he was transferred to Havana in 1766 and given his first command, the sloop ''Vibora''. In 1767 he was promoted to ''teniente de navío'' (lieutenant). In 1771 Arteaga returned to Spain and tried to marry without certain required royal and ecclesiastical permissions. The priest who was to perform the marriage ceremony refused and Arteaga made an appeal to the ecclesiastical tribunal. During the proceedings grew abusive and insulting. Cape Saint Elias is a cape in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located at the southwest end of Kayak Island, 104 km (65 mi) southeast of Cordova, at . It is commonly believed that Mount Saint Elias, the second highest mountain in the United States and Canada, is named for this landform. The cape was named by Danish explorer Vitus Bering on July 20, 1741, for St. Elias, whose saint's day is July 20.
