Kavalam Chundan
Kavalam Chundan is a snake boat that belongs to Kavalam village. This snake boat was formerly known as Kainakary Puthan Chundan. It was later purchased by Mr Kochupurackal Ouseph Thomman in 1942. In 1943 it was rebuilt and named Kavalam Chundan; after the death of Ouseph Thomman, his son Mr Thomman Joseph took over ownership. This boat won the Nehru Trophy Boat Race for backwater racing in 1949, 1950, 1958, 1960 and 1962. Snake Boat
Chundan vallam ('beaked boat'), known outside Kerala as Kerala snake boats, are one of the icons of Kerala culture used in the Vallamkali or boat race. Naval architecture Constructed according to specifications taken from the '' Sthapatya Veda'', an ancient treatise for the building of wooden boats, these boats vary from 100 to 138 feet in length. With the rear portion rising to a height of about 20 feet, and a long tapering front portion, it resembles a snake with its hood raised. Hulls are built of planks precisely 83 feet in length and six inches wide. The boats are a good example of ancient vishwakarma' prowess in naval architecture. Kavalam
Kavalam is a village in Kuttanadu, Kerala state, Alappuzha District. India. Location Kavalam is located on the borders of Alapuzha and Kottayam districts, on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Environment The Pampa river flows through the village to merge into Vembanad Lake. The natural environment has been used as a location by many filmmakers. Nehru Trophy Boat Race
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an annual ''vallam kali'' held in the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha, Kerala, India. ''Vallam Kali'' or ''Vallamkali''y literally means boat play/game, but can be translated to boat race in English. The most popular event of the race is the competition of ''Chundan Vallams'' (snake boats). Hence the race is also known as Snake Boat Race in English. Kerala Backwaters
The Kerala backwaters are a network of brackish lagoons and canals lying parallel to the Arabian Sea of the Malabar coast of Kerala state in south-western India. It also includes interconnected lakes, rivers, and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than of waterways, and sometimes compared to bayous. The network includes five large lakes linked by canals, both man made and natural, fed by 38 rivers, and extending virtually half the length of Kerala state. Vallam Kali
Vallam kali ('' vaḷḷaṃ kaḷi'', literally: boat game) also known as Snake Boat Race is a traditional boat race in Kerala, India. It is a form of canoe racing, and uses paddled war canoes. It is mainly conducted during the season of the harvest festival Onam in spring. Vallam kali includes races of many kinds of paddled longboats and 'snake boats'. Each team spends about 6 lakh rupees for the Nehru Trophy. The race of chundan vallam ('snake boat', about 30-35 meter (100-120 feet) long with 64 or 128 paddlers aboard) is the major event and a major tourist attraction.
