Kaufman County, Texas
Kaufman County is a county in the northeast area of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 145,310. Its county seat is Kaufman. Both the county, established in 1848, and the city were named for David S. Kaufman, a U.S. Representative and diplomat from Texas. Kaufman County is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth- Arlington metropolitan statistical area. Western artist Frank Reaugh moved from Illinois to Kaufman County in 1876. There he was directly inspired for such paintings as ''The Approaching Herd'' (1902). Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which are land and (3.3%) are covered by water. Located in the northeast portion of Texas, it is bounded on the southwest by the Trinity River, and drained by the east fork of that stream. David Spangler Kaufman
David Spangler Kaufman (December 18, 1813 – January 31, 1851) was an attorney, politician, and diplomat, serving as U.S. Representative from Texas. When the Republic of Texas was independent, he served in both houses of its legislature, and as ''chargé d'affaires'' of Texas to the United States. Early life and education David Spangler Kaufman was born in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania, the son of Mary (Spangler) and Abraham Landis Kaufman. He was of German-Jewish ancestry, and his paternal great-grandfather was a Mennonite minister. Kaufman, Texas was named for David Spangler Kaufman, the son of Abraham and Mary (Spangler) Kaufman. Abraham was the son of John and Christianna (Landis) Kaufman; John was the son of Frederick Kaufman, a Mennonite minister. Trinity River (Texas)
The Trinity River is a river, the longest with a watershed entirely within the U.S. state of Texas. It rises in extreme northern Texas, a few miles south of the Red River. The headwaters are separated by the high bluffs on the southern side of the Red River. Indigenous peoples call the northern sections ''Arkikosa'' and the parts closer to the coast ''Daycoa''. Texas Spur 557
Spur 557 is a spur route in the city of Terrell in the U.S. state of Texas. Spur 557 is a freeway connector between I-20 and US 80. It is signed as "Spur 557 To I-20" eastbound or "Spur 557 To US 80" westbound. Spur 557 is the original routing of I-20 prior to I-20 being rerouted to the south. The route traverses a largely undeveloped area in Kaufman County, Texas between Forney, Texas and Terrell, Texas and serves to distribute eastbound traffic onto Interstate 20 and westbound traffic onto the US 80 freeway leading into the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Texas State Highway 243
State Highway 243 (SH 243) is a state highway that runs from Kaufman east to Canton. The route was designated on February 10, 1937 from Kaufman through Canton to Van, replacing a section of SH 110, which was rerouted off of this road. The section from Canton to Van was removed on March 26, 1942 when it was transferred to FM 16. On May 23, 1951, FM 1654 was designated from SH 243 & SH 198 to SH 64. When completed, FM 1654 was signed, but not designated, as SH 243. On July 16, 1957, SH 243 was extended west to new US 175. On August 29, 1990, SH 243 was extended to SH 64 over FM 1654. Texas State Highway 205
State Highway 205 (SH 205) is a Texas state highway that runs from SH 78 at Lavon to US 80 at Terrell. This route was designated on May 15, 1934, from Terrell to Rockwall, and was extended north to Lavon on September 1, 1939. The route has been under heavy construction since 2006 as part of a new expansion and widening project, and was scheduled to be completed in 2011. The highway has a bypass road as well, John King Blvd., which begins near the Collin county border, and ends just before the intersection with Farm to Market Road 549. State Highway 34 (SH 34) is a route that runs from Honey Grove, Texas, Honey Grove to Italy, Texas, Italy just east of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. History SH 34 was originally proposed on November 19, 1917, starting in Ft. Worth travelling southeast to Ennis, Texas, Ennis. On October 15, 1923, SH 34 was extended to Kaufman. US 175
U.S. Highway 175 (US 175) is a east-west United States Numbered Highway located completely within the state of Texas. It comes very close to meeting its parent route, U.S. Route 75 in Texas, US 75, but decommissioning and rerouting in Downtown Dallas leaves it short a couple of miles. Before the decommissioning of US 75 south of downtown Dallas in favor of Interstate 45 (I-45), US 175 met US 75. US 175's western terminus is in Dallas at I-45. The highway's eastern terminus is in Jacksonville, Texas, Jacksonville at an intersection with U.S. Route 69 in Texas, US 69. Much of the US 175 corridor (from Interstate 20 (Texas), I-20 in Balch Springs to US 69 in Jacksonville) is part of TxDOT's network of evacuation routes in the event of a hurricane.
