She received a Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film ''Brink of Life'' (1958). Dahlbeck retired from acting in 1970 and became an author. Carlsen's 1966 social-realistic drama ''Hunger'' (''Sult'') was nominated for the Palme d'Or and won the Bodil Award for Best Danish Film.
