Kathy J. Helzlsouer
Kathy J. Helzlsouer is an American oncologist, internist, and cancer epidemiologist who investigates cancer etiology and prevention, women's health, genetic counseling, and translational research. At the National Cancer Institute, she is the associate director of the epidemiology and genomics research program and chief medical officer for the division of cancer control and population sciences. Life Helzlsouer received her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and obtained a Master of Health Science in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. She completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia and medical oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) coordinates the United States National Cancer Program and is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is one of eleven agencies that are part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The NCI conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other activities related to the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer; the supportive care of cancer patients and their families; and cancer survivorship. Cancer Epidemiologists
Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they can also have other causes. Over 100 types of cancers affect humans. Tobacco use is the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths. Another 10% are due to obesity, poor diet, lack of physical activity or excessive drinking of alcohol. Other factors include certain infections, exposure to ionizing radiation, and environmental pollutants. In the developing world, 15% of cancers are due to infections such as ''Helicobacter pylori'', hepatitis B, hepatitis C, human papillomavirus infection, Epstein–Barr virus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
