Katherine Reed Balentine
Katherine Reed Balentine (1878September 17, 1934) was an American suffragist and the founder of The Yellow Ribbon suffrage magazine. Suffrage work This magazine was a statewide newspaper which promoted women's suffrage. Reed was a leading figure in the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA); in 1907, she was part of a NAWSA delegation which met with President Theodore Roosevelt. She led the Maine branch of NAWSA from 19161917. In 1917 she was quoted as saying, "there is nothing radical about equal suffrage." Women's suffrage is the right of women to vote in elections. Beginning in the start of the 18th century, some people sought to change voting laws to allow women to vote. Liberal political parties would go on to grant women the right to vote, increasing the number of those parties' potential constituencies. National and international organizations formed to coordinate efforts towards women voting, especially the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (founded in 1904 in Berlin, Germany).
