Katherine Ashenburg
Katherine Ashenburg is a Canadian writer best known for her 2018 debut novel ''Sofie & Cecilia''. Career Ashenburg began her career as a CBC Radio producer, eventually becoming an editor at ''The Globe and Mail'' newspaper. In 1996 Ashenburg published her first book, ''Going to Town: Architectural Walking Tours in Southern Ontario''. She would follow that with two more works of non-fiction: ''The Mourner's Dance: What We Do When People Die'', which she wrote after her son-in-law died in 1998 and ''The Dirt on Clean: An Unsanitized History''. Ashenberg released her debut novel ''Sofie & Cecilia'' a few months shy of her 73rd birthday. ''Sofie & Cecilia'' is a historical novel by Canadian author Katherine Ashenburg. The novel drew attention for being Ashenburg's fiction debut published when she was 72. She was inspired to write the book after a visit to Sweden where she learned that despite the fact that they had the same artistic training, Swedish artist Carl Larsson refused to allow his wife Karin to paint after they were married. She initially reached out to her friend, writer Jane Urquhart, hoping she would write about the Larssons, but Urquhart instead encouraged Ashenburg to write a novel about them herself. Carl Olof Larsson (; 28 May 1853 – 22 January 1919) was a Swedish painter representative of the Arts and Crafts movement. His many paintings include oils, watercolors, and frescoes. He is principally known for his watercolors of idyllic family life. Karin Bergöö Larsson
Karin Larsson, née Bergöö, (3 October 1859 – 18 February 1928) was a Swedish artist and designer who collaborated with her husband, Carl Larsson, as well as being often depicted in his paintings. Early life and education Karin Bergöö was born in Örebro and grew up in Hallsberg, where her father, Adolf Bergöö, was a successful businessman. Her younger sister, Stina, married the English geologist Francis Arthur Bather. Karin showed early artistic talent, and after attending the Franska Skolan Ecole Française in Stockholm, studied at the ''Slöjdskolan'' (Handicrafts School; now Konstfack) and from 1877 to 1882 at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. Jane Urquhart, LL.D (born June 21, 1949) is a Canadian novelist and poet. She is the internationally acclaimed author of seven award-winning novels, three books of poetry and numerous short stories. As a novelist, Urquhart is well known for her evocative style which blends history with the present day.
