Katharine Bethell
Katharine, Lady Parsons ( Bethell; 1859 – 16 October 1933) was the co-founder and second President of the Women's Engineering Society (WES), and an engineer in her own right. Partnership with Charles Parsons Born to William Frogatt Bethell at Rise Park in the East Riding of Yorkshire in 1859, Katharine met the Hon. Charles Parsons in Leeds in 1882 while he was working there as an engineer. Laura Annie Willson
Laura Annie Willson Order of the British Empire, MBE (née Buckley) (15 August 1877 – 17 April 1942) was an English engineer and suffragette, who was twice imprisoned for her political activities. She was one of the founding members of the Women's Engineering Society and was the first female member of the Home Builders Federation, Federation of House Builders. Early life and factory career Laura Annie Buckley was born on 15 August 1877 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, Halifax, Yorkshire to Charles Buckley (1836/7–1899), dyer's labourer, and Augusta, ''née'' Leaver (1838/9–1907). She started work at the age of ten as a 'half-timer' in a local textile factory. Half time in factories was introduced to spare children from working a full day; instead they worked half the day and spent the rest of the time at school, which was often built within the factory compound. Kirkwhelpington
Kirkwhelpington is a village and civil parish in the English county of Northumberland about northeast of Hexham. It is on the River Wansbeck alongside the A696 trunk road between Otterburn and Ponteland. History Kirkwhelpington has medieval origins and is an abortive market town. The lord, Gilbert de Umfraville, obtained a market charter from King Henry III but lost its privileges on the grounds of non-usage. He had a bridge built over the Wansbeck to improve its communications. Economy There was a mine at Kirkwhelpington (Lead ore). Landmarks The Memorial Hall was built in 1924 as a memorial to the men of the village and district who gave their lives in the First World War. Money for this was raised locally with the Duke of Northumberland donating the land. The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights is one of the ancient livery companies of the City of London. Although the Shipwrights' Company is no longer a shipbuilding trade association representing solely London-based industry, through its membership it retains strong links with global trade, and maritime and shipping professions. Atalanta Ltd (1921–1937) was an engineering company set up in 1921 in the UK by a small group of women engineers. It was considered notable at the time for providing employment specifically for women engineers, who were barred from many engineering works and apprenticeships. Founding Dora Turner and Annette Ashberry, who were working for Galloway Engineering at their Tongland Works, decided to set up a company that would allow women to gain experience in engineering. They then approached the founders of the Women's Engineering Society for support and financial backing. There were eight people involved in foundation of the company. The company's chair was Lady Katherine Parsons, who was also one of the principal shareholders along with Lady Eleanor Shelly-Rolls. Dame Caroline Harriet Haslett DBE, JP (17 August 1895 – 4 January 1957) was an English electrical engineer, electricity industry administrator and champion of women's rights.
