Kate M. Fox
Kate M. Fox (born 1955) is an American lawyer who has served as the chief justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court since 2021. Fox moved to Wyoming when she was 16, after her family bought a ranch near Dubois. She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Wyoming in 1976, and a Juris Doctor at the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1989. She was editor-in-chief of the ''Land & Water Law Review''. Fox clerked for federal judge Clarence Addison Brimmer Jr., of the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming, in 1989–90. Fox was in private practice from 1990 to 2013 with the law firm Davis & Cannon in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She specialized in employment law and natural resources law. Fox also served for five years on the Wyoming State Bar Board of Professional Responsibility, and on the Standing Committee on Local Rules for the U.S. District Court for Wyoming. Wyoming Supreme Court
The Wyoming Supreme Court is the supreme court, highest court in the U.S. state of Wyoming. The Court consists of a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices. Each Justice is appointed by the Governor of Wyoming from a list of three nominees submitted by the judicial nominating commission, for an eight-year term. One year after being appointed, a new justice stands for retention in office on a statewide ballot at the next general election. If a majority votes for retention, the justice serves the remainder of the term and may stand for retention for succeeding eight-year terms by means of a nonpartisan retention ballot every eight years. A justice must be a lawyer with at least nine years' experience in the law, at least 30 years old, and a United States citizen who has resided in Wyoming for at least three years. A judicial nominating commission (also judicial nominating committee, judicial nominating board) in the United States, is a body used by some U.S. states to recommend or select potential justices and judges for appointments by state governments. Judicial nominating commissions are often established by the state constitution as part of merit selection plans. They are designed to be independent bodies. A common procedure is for the commission to receive applications for that position and forward three names to the governor, who has some number of days (often 60) to select one.
