Kasteel Wittem
__NOTOC__ Kasteel Wittem is a defunct restaurant located in ''Castle Wittem'' in Wittem, in the Netherlands. It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1977 and retained that rating until 1989. In the period 1975–1979, head chef was Jan Vossen. At least in the period 1987–1990, Theus van Schaik was the head chef. Wim Rekko took over, but could not retain the star. The restaurant was part of ''Hotel Kasteel Wittem'', which closed down in June 2009. The owners Marc and Peter Ritzen had run the hotel for 40 years. The hotel reopened, now without a restaurant, in January 2010. In 2008, ''Kasteel Wittem'' and ''Hostellerie De Hamert'' celebrated with special arrangements the fact that they were together 100 years in business, the first since 1968, the second since 1948. Alliance Gastronomique Néerlandaise (popular: ''Alliance Gastronomique'') is a culinary association of quality restaurants in the Netherlands and Flanders. The partnership was established in 1967 as a response to the spreading taste flattening, lack of culinary products and inadequate training of chefs and other restaurant staff. By that time the Netherlands were not known for their culinary tradition, so the partnership of the 19 founding restaurateurs was a break with the past. At that time the "Alliance Gastronomique" stated the promotion of the culinary culture in the Netherlands as its mission. Hostellerie De Hamert was a restaurant in Wellerlooi in the Netherlands, most famous for its asparagus dishes in spring. It is a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1963 and retained that rating until 1989. GaultMillau awarded the restaurant 12.0 out of 20 points. Former head chef Herman van Ham took care about the kitchen for 39 years. When Bernard Lieftink took over in 1989, the restaurant lost its star. Wittem
Wittem (, ) is a small village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. History The village was first mentioned in 1125 as Witham, and means "means silted land in a bend in a waterway". Wittem developed in the Early Middle Ages. In the 13th century, a castle was built near the confluence of the Selzerbeek with the Geul. It used to be a free ''heerlijkheid'' (=no fief), but was bought by Ferdinand Adolph von Plettenberg in 1722 and elevated to barony in 1732. Wittem Castle is surrounded by two moats. The tower and southern wing date from the 13th century. The west wing was added in the 15th century. In 1569, it was damaged by Spanish troops. The southern wing was extended around 1700. In 1968, the castle was restored and converted into a hotel-restaurant. The Catholic St Alphonsus of Liguori and Johannes Nepomuk Church was built between 1729 and 1733.
