Kartëhl
Kartëhl or Kãrtëhl is the fifteenth studio album by French progressive rock and zeuhl group Magma, released on 30 September 2022 by Seventh Records as a compact disc and three-sided double LP. The album is a collaborative work between the band members, with royalties from the track ''Dëhndë'' to benefit the French charity ''La Fondation Initiative Autisme'' for people with autism. The album was recorded by Francis Linon at the band's own UZ Studio between 7 March and 12 June 2022, and mastered by Marcus Linon at Greasy Records Studio in Paris. Background After the previous album, '' Zëss'', the subject of which is of a universe-ending apocalypse, the band members wanted to produce a brighter and more optimistic album with ''Kartëhl''. ''Kartëhl'' is notable for being the first album since 1976's '' Üdü Ẁüdü'' to have songs not written by Vander fill up half of the album's tracklist. Magma is a French progressive rock band founded in Paris in 1969 by classically trained drummer Christian Vander, who claimed as his inspiration a "vision of humanity's spiritual and ecological future" that profoundly disturbed him. In the course of their first album, the band tells the story of a group of people fleeing a doomed Earth to settle on the planet Kobaïa. Later, conflict arises when the Kobaïans—descendants of the original colonists—encounter other Earth refugees. The style of progressive rock that Vander developed with Magma is termed Zeuhl, and has been applied to other bands in France operating in the same period, and to some recent Japanese bands. Vander created a fictional language, Kobaïan, in which most lyrics are sung. __NOTOC__ ''Zëss'' (also known as ''Zëss: Le Jour du Néant'') is the fourteenth studio album by the French rock band Magma, which was released on 14 June 2019 on Christian Vander's Seventh Records. The composition dates back to the 1970s and has been performed live on several occasions (including Bobino Concert 1981, Les Voix Concert 1992, and Mythes Et Legendes Volume IV 2008) but never recorded in studio until 2018. The work was performed live in the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez of Philharmonie de Paris on 26 June 2019, celebrating 50 years of Magma. Concept Albums
A concept album is an album whose tracks hold a larger purpose or meaning collectively than they do individually. This is typically achieved through a single central narrative or theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, or lyrical. Sometimes the term is applied to albums considered to be of "uniform excellence" rather than an LP with an explicit musical or lyrical motif. There is no consensus among music critics as to the specific criteria for what a "concept album" is. Christian Vander (musician)
Christian Vander (born 21 February 1948) is a French drummer, musician, and founder of the band Magma. Career Vander is known for his extended compositions, drumming, and shrill falsetto improvisational/scat singing. His music fuses jazz, rock, classical and operatic influences, and draws on the work of musicians as diverse as John Coltrane and Carl Orff. Family Christian Vander is the adopted child of famous French jazz piano player Maurice Vander (who was a long time sideman of the French singer Claude Nougaro). Most of Vander and Magma's recorded work is still available through Vander's own record label, Seventh Records. The very first issue of this album was issued with a provisional sleeve, as Klaus Blasquiz's artwork was not finished on time. This art features in all later issues. Mastering, a form of audio post production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master), the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication or replication). In recent years digital masters have become usual, although analog masters—such as audio tapes—are still being used by the manufacturing industry, particularly by a few engineers who specialize in analog mastering. Mastering requires critical listening; however, software tools exist to facilitate the process. Results depend upon the intent of the engineer, the skills of the engineer, the accuracy of the speaker monitors, and the listening environment.
