Karlovac Piano Festival
Karlovac Piano Festival is a diverse musical project taking place in Karlovac, Croatia. The festival is hosted by Karlovac Music School, which is the oldest musical institution in Croatia, founded in 1804. The festival was established in 2013, and has been held annually during the month of July. Its program consists of educational activities such as master-classes, individual lessons, as well as guest artist and student recitals. Since 2014, the festival also features Karlovac International Piano Competition, which in 2016 has been endorsed by Alink-Argerich Foundation. Karlovac () is a city in central Croatia. According to the 2011 census, its population was 55,705. Karlovac is the administrative centre of Karlovac County. The city is located on the Zagreb-Rijeka highway and railway line, south-west of Zagreb and from Rijeka. Name The city was named after its founder, Charles II, Archduke of Austria. Kemal Gekić (born February 16, 1962, in Split, Croatia, then Yugoslavia) is a Croatian-born American concert pianist and Full Professor of Piano Performance at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, USA. Early life Kemal Gekić was born in Split, Croatia, to a Croatian mother and a Bosniak father. The maternal side of his family was extremely musical, and his father, an orthopedic surgeon, displayed a lifelong passion for music. Gekić displayed his musical gift extremely early even by the usual child prodigy standards - by picking up melodies by ear and accurately playing them on the piano at the age of one-and-half. Anna Malikova
Anna Malikova (born 14 July 1965) is a Russian pianist. Life Malikova was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where she received her first musical education with Tamara A. Popovich at Uspensky Music School. At the age of 14 years she entered Central Music School in Moscow in the class of Lev Naumov. Later, she continued her studies with Naumov at Tchaikovsky Conservatory. After her graduation she taught at the conservatory as Naumov's assistant from 1992 until 1996. Her career started afterwards, first in the Soviet Union. Vladimir Ovchinnikov (pianist)
Vladimir Pavlovich Ovchinnikov (russian: Владимир Павлович Овчинников; born January 2, 1958) is a Russian pianist from Belebey, Bashkir ASSR. He is the only pianist ever to win the top prizes at both the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1982, first prize not awarded, received a joint 2nd prize with Peter Donohoe) and the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition (1987). Liu Shikun
Liu Shikun (; born March 8, 1939) is a Chinese pianist and composer. He began his piano training at the age of three and started publicly performing by the age of five. He won third prize and the Special Prize of the Liszt International Piano Competition in Budapest in 1956 and was awarded a strand of Franz Liszt's hair. In 1958, he shared with Lev Vlassenko the second prize in the First Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. Liu became one of China's top concert performers until 1966, when the Cultural Revolution and the Gang of Four attacked the country; Western music was banned and, along with thousands of other artists, Liu was arrested. Vladimir Viardo
Vladimir Viardo (born 1949 in Krasnaya Polyana, Soviet Union), is a Russian pianist. Career The first steps in music were taken with his mother, the classical singer, voice teacher and pianist Nathalia Viardo. Viardo studied with Irina Naumova at the Gnessin State Musical College and later studied with Lev Naumov at the Moscow Conservatory, where he remained as a student for six years. Naumov would describe him as "my number one pupil". During this time, he was tenured as a soloist by Moscow Philharmonia (the primary music organization of the USSR). After obtaining a doctorate, he was immediately engaged as assistant professor with Naumov at the Conservatory. Piano Competitions
The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather).
