Karl Ferdinand Ignatius
Karl Emil Ferdinand Ignatius (27 September 1837 – 11 September 1909) was a Finnish historian, the head of the Main Office of Statistics and a Senator. Biography Ignatius was born in Pori, the son of vice-pastor Johan Ferdinand Ignatius and Sofia Fleming. He graduated secondary school in 1855 and enrolled in the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki, gaining his undergraduate and graduate degrees in 1860, a Licenciate degree in 1862 and finally his Ph.D in 1864. Ignatius worked as a civil servant in the Finnish Main Office of Statistics from 1865 to 1868 and then as the head of the office from 1868 to 1885. He was the head of the chamber committee of the Senate of Finland during 1885–1900 and 1905–1908. The estates of the realm, or three estates, were the broad orders of social hierarchy used in Christendom (Christian Europe) from the Middle Ages to early modern Europe. Different systems for dividing society members into estates developed and evolved over time. The best known system is the French ''Ancien Régime'' (Old Regime), a three-estate system which was made up of clergy (the First Estate), nobles (Second Estate), peasants and bourgeoisie (Third Estate). In some regions, notably Sweden and Russia, burghers (the urban merchant class) and rural commoners were split into separate estates, creating a four-estate system with rural commoners ranking the lowest as the Fourth Estate. The Governor, fi, Maaherra, or sv, Landshövding, of a province of Finland headed the activities of the State Provincial Office, fi, Lääninhallitus, links=no, or sv, Länsstyrelse, links=no until the end of 2009, when the provinces were abolished. The governors were appointed by the President. Hannes Ignatius
Johannes Ferdinand "Hannes" Ignatius (1871, Helsinki – 1941) was a Finnish soldier and a prominent advocate for Finnish independence. Biography Ignatius was the son of the Fennophile Senator, Karl Ferdinand Ignatius, and Amanda Kristina Bergman. Ignatius received his military education at The Hamina Cadet School from 1885–1892, and at the Nicholas Academy of General Staff in St Petersburg from 1896–1899. Military service Ignatius served in the Finnish Dragoon Regiment from 1892 to 1901. He was promoted to captain in 1900. After the abolition of The Military of the Grand Duchy of Finland, he sought a career in business from 1901–1917. During World War I Ignatius was a prominent member of the Military Committee working for the Independence of Finland and was promoted to colonel and then major general in 1918.
