Karl-Otto Stöhr
Karl-Otto Stöhr (born 9 May 1942) is a German mathematician working on algebraic geometry. He is a titular researcher at the IMPA. Stöhr is a titular member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and has received Brazil's National Order of Scientific Merit. He is also a member of the European Academy of Sciences. Algebraic geometry is a branch of mathematics, classically studying zeros of multivariate polynomials. Modern algebraic geometry is based on the use of abstract algebraic techniques, mainly from commutative algebra, for solving geometrical problems about these sets of zeros. The fundamental objects of study in algebraic geometry are algebraic varieties, which are geometric manifestations of solutions of systems of polynomial equations. Jacques Tits
Jacques Tits () (12 August 1930 – 5 December 2021) was a Belgian-born French mathematician who worked on group theory and incidence geometry. He introduced Tits buildings, the Tits alternative, the Tits group, and the Tits metric. Life and career Tits was born in Uccle to Léon Tits, a professor, and Lousia André. Jacques attended the Athénée of Uccle and the Free University of Brussels.
