The Karelian Bobtail is a breed of cat that originated in the Lake Ladoga region of the Republic of Karelia, Russia. History The breed was first recognised by the World Cat Federation in 1994. Characteristics Karelian Bobtails can be either short-haired or long-haired. The tail varies from 4 to 13 cm in length, and has longer hair than that of the body. World Cat Federation
The World Cat Federation (WCF) is an international association of cat clubs. It was founded in 1988 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and continues to have a strong presence in Latin America, Western Europe, and in countries of the former USSR. It is currently based in Germany. There are 370 organizations worldwide associated to the WCF. The current president is Anneliese Hackmann from Essen. Purpose The WCF allows the breeders of affiliated clubs to register their kennel names internationally. They create standards for the 68 pedigreed breeds of cats recognized by the club. The WCF trains judges for exhibitions and organizes the examinations. Generally, the WCF is designed to promote international contacts of the cat clubs affiliated. Kurilian Bobtail
The Kurilian Bobtail is a cat breed (or breed group, depending on registry) originating from the (disputed) Russian Kuril Islands, as well as Sakhalin Island and the Kamchatka peninsula of Russia. Short- or long-haired, it has a semi-cobby body type and a distinct short, fluffy tail. The back is slightly arched with hind legs longer than the front, similar to those of the Manx. The breed is also called the Kuril Islands Bobtail, Kuril Bobtail (both often misspelled "Kurile") and Curilsk Bobtail, and may be referred to without "Bobtail". It is sometimes also spelled Kurilean. The original short-haired variant is a natural breed, known on the islands for over 200 years.
