Karelia ( Karelian and fi, Karjala, ; rus, Каре́лия, links=y, r=Karélija, p=kɐˈrʲelʲɪjə, historically ''Korjela''; sv, Karelen), the land of the Karelian people, is an area in Northern Europe of historical significance for Russia (including the Soviet era), Finland, and Sweden. Tver Oblast (russian: Тверска́я о́бласть, ''Tverskaya oblast'', ), from 1935 to 1990 known as Kalinin Oblast (), is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Its administrative center is the city of Tver. It was named after Mikhail Kalinin, the Soviet revolutionary. Population: 1,353,392 ( 2010 Census). Tver Oblast is a region of lakes, such as Seliger and Brosno. Much of the remaining area is occupied by the Valdai Hills, where the Volga, the Western Dvina, and the Dnieper have their source. ''The Karelian Isthmus'' is the title of the first full-length studio LP album of Finnish metal band Amorphis, released in 1992. Although ''The Karelian Isthmus'' took its name from a historic Finnish battleground, Karelian Isthmus, its lyrics focus on Amorphis's well known epic themes from the history of Finnish warfare and religion, but drawing more from Celtic mythology rather than the later traditions of Amorphis's own native land. The epic side is sometimes broken up by the occult lyrical themes in tracks including "Pilgrimage", "Misery Path" and "Black Embrace". In recent years, songs from this album have been receiving more play during Amorphis' live performances, despite being of a different style than their later works. Lidia Richardovna Klement (russian: Ли́дия Ри́чардовна Кле́мент; 8 July 1937, in Leningrad – 16 June 1964, in Leningrad) was a Soviet singer. Early life She was involved with music and singing since childhood, studying piano at a music school for children and singing in a choir. Later, when studying at the Leningrad Institute of Civil Engineering, Klement sang in a student jazz ensemble. Career After graduation, she worked for two years as a design engineer and sang with the Naum Tyomkin Variety Orchestra at the Ordzhonikidze Palace of Culture. In 1958, for about a year, she sang with the ensemble of the Leningrad Comedy Theater. She was noticed and composers started writing songs especially for her. She was a member of Onyanko Club between May 1986 and September 1987 and went on to have a successful solo career with 11 number-one hits. Biography Kudo began her singing career at the age of 14 as a member of three-piece pop unit Seventeen Club consisted of runners-up from the 1984 Miss Seventeen Contest organized by Japanese teen magazine ''Seventeen'', which Shueisha publishes. They had two singles released by CBS/Sony Records in 1985. Karelia is a French heavy metal band created in 2000 by Lionel Vest and Matthieu Kleiber. Biography Karelia first released a self-titled demo in 2000. Their first full-length album ''Usual Tragedy'' was released in 2004 on the German label Drakkar Records. The orchestral arrangements give it its symphonic heavy metal (or simply symphonic metal) tag. Lyricwise, ''Usual Tragedy'' is a concept album about a man who crossed both World Wars, lost his father during the first one, lost his beloved one during the second one, witnessed the violence and the madness of men, eventually lost his own sanity and died alone and anonymous in an hospital. Their second studio album, ''Raise'', released in 2005 on Drakkar Records as well, is not as orchestral as ''Usual Tragedy'' but has dark, melancholic atmospheres that could already be heard on the first album as well and that seem to be the band's trademark; that's why Karelia's music is also sometimes called gothic metal. ''Karelia Suite'', Op. 11 is a subset of pieces from the longer ''Karelia Music'' (named after the region of Karelia) written by Jean Sibelius in 1893 for the Viipuri Students' Association and premiered, with Sibelius conducting, at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki, Grand Duchy of Finland, on 23 November of that year. Sibelius first conducted the shorter ''Suite'' ten days later; it remains one of his most popular works. ''Karelia Music'' was written in the beginning of Sibelius's compositional career, and the complete ''Music'' consists of an Overture, 8 Tableaux, and 2 Intermezzi; it runs for about 44 minutes, whereas the ''Suite'' lasts about 12 minutes.
