Karapet Mikaelyan ( hy, Կարապետ Միքայելյան, born 27 September 1969) is a former Russian-born Armenian association football, football Striker (association football), striker. Karapet was also a member of Armenia national football team, Armenia national team, participated in 20 international matches and scored 2 goals since his debut on 5 October 1996, in away match against Northern Ireland national football team, Northern Ireland. Health problems In September 2011, Mikaelyan has been diagnosed with severe heart failure and was in urgent need of heart transplantation. The fans of his former clubs FC Zvezda Irkutsk and FC Krylia Sovetov Samara had raised funds to finance his heart surgery. However, the president of Armenian Football Federation Ruben Hayrapetyan has announced that the heart operation will be financed through his federation. A heart transplant, or a cardiac transplant, is a surgical transplant procedure performed on patients with end-stage heart failure or severe coronary artery disease when other medical or surgical treatments have failed. , the most common procedure is to take a functioning heart, with or without both lungs, from a recently deceased organ donor (brain death is the standard) and implant it into the patient. The Armenia national football team has represented Armenia in international association football since 1992 after the country declared independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Prior to this, Armenian players had represented the Soviet Union national football team. UEFA Euro 2000 Qualifying
Qualifying for the UEFA Euro 2000 final tournament, took place throughout 1998 and 1999. Forty-nine teams were divided into nine groups. All teams played against each other, within their groups, on a home-and-away basis. The winner of each group and the best runner-up qualified automatically for the final tournament. The rest of the runners-up played an additional set of playoff matches amongst each other. Belgium and the Netherlands qualified automatically as co-hosts of the event. Listed below are the dates and results for the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the European zone (UEFA). A total of 50 UEFA teams entered the competition; Andorra, which joined FIFA and UEFA in November 1996 while the qualifiers were underway, could not enter. The European zone was allocated 15 places (out of 32) in the final tournament. France, the hosts, qualified automatically, leaving 14 spots open for competition between 49 teams.
