Kara Laricks is an American fashion designer. Laricks was the season one winner of ''Fashion Star''. Personal life Kara Laricks was a fourth grade elementary school teacher for ten years before she quit to become a fashion designer. She loved design as a child and chose to become a teacher because it was a "safe career." Laricks lives and works in New York, New York. Laricks attended the Academy of Art University and graduated in 2008. Laricks is a lesbian who hid her orientation whilst a schoolteacher but remained out personally. She came out publicly on national television during the first season of ''Fashion Star''. She stated she was nervous about coming out on television. ''Fashion Star'' is an American reality television series on NBC, created and executive produced by E.J. Johnston, James Deutch and Rick Ringbakk which focuses on fashion design and is hosted by Louise Roe. It was hosted by Elle Macpherson in the first season. The contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and are restricted in time, materials and theme. Their designs are judged, and one or more designers are eliminated each week. On May 11, 2012, NBC renewed ''Fashion Star'' for a second season. Season 2 premiered Friday, March 7, 2013. On July 27, 2013, NBC canceled ''Fashion Star'' after two seasons. John Varvatos (born 1954) is an American menswear designer. Early life The Varvatos family is originally from the village of Poulata on the island of Kefalonia, Greece. Varvatos was born in Detroit and grew up in Allen Park, Michigan. He attended Allen Park High School. At the age of 16, he got a job selling menswear at the Hughes & Hatcher store in nearby Dearborn.
