Kappu Bilupu
''Kappu Bilupu'' ( kn, ಕಪ್ಪು ಬಿಳುಪು, which means Black and White) is a 1969 Indian Kannada language film directed by Puttanna Kanagal. Based on a novel of the same name by Aryamba Pattabhi, this movie revolves around the contrasting behaviors of an identical, yet distinct pair of twins. The film starred Kalpana in dual roles. Puttanna himself remade the movie in Tamil as ''Irulum Oliyum'' and in Telugu as ''Iddaru Ammayilu''. Puttanna used the movie as a medium for speaking to the youth of the ideals he derived from Vivekananda. The settings are simple and mostly rural. The story is about how domestic peace was better than a glamorously consumptive lifestyle. The juxtaposition of the two sisters played by Kalpana in a black and white background was a clever trick. Puttanna Kanagal
Shubraveshti Ramaswamiah Seetharama Sharma (1 December 1933 – 5 June 1985), known popularly as S. R. Puttanna Kanagal, was an Indian filmmaker known for his work in Kannada cinema. He is often considered one of Kannada cinema's most influential filmmakers. Background and personal life Puttanna Kanagal was born to Ramaswamaiah and Subbamma in Kanagal, Mysore, Kanagal, a village in the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore into a poor family. As he hailed from a poor brahmin family, he had to endure hardships and struggled to get a decent job. He worked as a teacher, salesman and even as a cleaner. Aryamba Pattabhi
Aryamba Pattabhi (born 12 March 1936) is an Indian novelist and writer in Kannada language. She is the younger sister of Triveni, a popular Kannada novelist and the niece of B. M. Srikantaiah, a famous Kannada poet, writer and translator. Her novels have been made into feature films, most prominently, ''Kappu Bilupu'' (1979), directed by Puttanna Kanagal and made into three south Indian languages Kannada, Telugu and Tamil, ''Eradu Mukha'' directed by M.R.Vittal and won the Karnataka State Award and best picture award from Madras Film Lovers Association, '' Savathiya Neralu'' (1978) directed by Y.R.Swamy and '' Marali Gudige'' (1984) directed by Shantharam and won the State Award. Kalpana (Kannada Actress)
Kalpana (18 July 1943 – 12 May 1979), born Sharat Lata, was an Indian actress who appeared in Kannada films. She was affectionately referred to as ''Minugu Taare'' ("A Shining Star") among the film fraternity. She was widely recognised as one of the greatest actresses of Kannada cinema who enjoyed both fan following and critical acclaim. She made her screen debut as a lead actress in the 1963 release ''Saaku Magalu'' directed by veteran B. R. Panthulu. Tirumakudalu Narasipura Balakrishna (2 November 1911 – 18 July 1995), commonly known an T. N. Balakrishna or Balanna, was an Indian actor in the Kannada film industry. He was said to have a hearing problem and some say that he was totally deaf. However, he would catch the lip movements of the artists and would narrate the dialogues spontaneously. Irulum Oliyum
''Irulum Oliyum'' () is a 1971 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film, directed and co-written by Puttanna Kanagal. A remake of Kanagal's own Kannada film ''Kappu Bilupu'' (1969), itself based on a novel by Aryammba Pattabi, it stars Vanisri in dual roles with A. V. M. Rajan and R. Muthuraman. It was again remade by the same director in telugu as Iddaru Ammayilu with Vanisri reprising her role. The film revolves around two lookalike cousin sisters who switch places for a few days to escape from their respective problems. It was released on 10 September 1971 and became a commercial success.
