The Kansas Department of Corrections is a cabinet-level agency of Kansas that operates the state's correctional facilities, both juvenile and adult; the state's parole system; and the state's Prisoner Review Board. Topeka, Kansas
Topeka ( ; Kansa: ; iow, Dópikˀe, script=Latn or ) is the capital city of the U.S. state of Kansas and the seat of Shawnee County. It is along the Kansas River in the central part of Shawnee County, in northeast Kansas, in the Central United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 126,587. The Topeka metropolitan statistical area, which includes Shawnee, Jackson, Jefferson, Osage, and Wabaunsee Counties, had a population of 233,870 in the 2010 census. The name "Topeka" is a Kansa-Osage word that means "place where we dig potatoes", or "a good place to dig potatoes". As a placename, Topeka was first recorded in 1826 as the Kansa name for what is now called the Kansas River. Topeka Correctional Facility
Topeka Correctional Facility is a Kansas Department of Corrections state prison for women located in Topeka, Kansas. Built in the 1970s, in 1995 it became the only women's prison in the state. It administers a wide range of security levels, from maximum security through work-release. The site was founded in 1905 as the Topeka Industrial Institute by the African American educator Edward S. Stephens, as a school on its own farmland, more or less modeled on the Tuskegee Institute. The school closed in 1955. Conditions Conditions in the facility have long been identified as extremely problematic. Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) is a state prison operated by the Kansas Department of Corrections. LCF is located in Lansing, Kansas, in Leavenworth County. LCF, along with the Federal Bureau of Prison's United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth, the United States Army Corrections Command's United States Disciplinary Barracks, and Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility in Fort Leavenworth are the four major prisons that give the Leavenworth area its reputation as a corrections center. Hutchinson Correctional Facility
Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) is a state prison operated by the Kansas Department of Corrections located in Hutchinson, Kansas. The prison was originally known as the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory (KSIR) and designed to house younger offenders. Construction on KSIR began in 1885, but delays prevented completion of the facility, which would not begin housing inmates until 1895. The name of the facility was changed to Hutchinson Correctional Facility in 1990 and today the prison houses an average of 1,830 inmates. Low security inmates at HCF have the opportunity to work on several projects such as highway maintenance, cleanup and maintenance at the annual state fair, assisting various public works departments of the city of Hutchinson and maintenance at Cheney State Park.
