Kansas City Stomp
"Kansas City Stomp" is a jazz standard by Jelly Roll Morton, first recorded in 1923. It has been described as "one of his (Morton's) happiest pieces". Morton was inspired in naming it after playing at a bar named "Kansas City Bar" in Tijuana. It has nothing to do with Kansas City itself. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010. Composition and recording In 1921, Jelly Roll Morton established himself in Los Angeles and assembled a group to play gigs all over southern California. He played as far south as Tijuana, where he performed at the Kansas City Bar. His experience there inspired him to compose "Kansas City Stomp". He also wrote "The Pearls", another jazz tune, for one of the waitresses at the bar. Jazz Standard
Jazz standards are musical compositions that are an important part of the musical repertoire of jazz musicians, in that they are widely known, performed, and recorded by jazz musicians, and widely known by listeners. There is no definitive list of jazz standards, and the list of songs deemed to be standards changes over time. Songs included in major fake book publications (sheet music collections of popular tunes) and jazz reference works offer a rough guide to which songs are considered standards. Not all jazz standards were written by jazz composers. Many are originally Tin Pan Alley popular songs, Broadway show tunes or songs from Hollywood musicals – the Great American Songbook. In Europe, jazz standards and "fake books" may even include some traditional folk songs (such as in Scandinavia) or pieces of ethnic music (such as gypsy melodies) that have been played with a jazz feel by well known jazz players. Jelly Roll Morton
Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe (later Morton; c. September 20, 1890 – July 10, 1941), known professionally as Jelly Roll Morton, was an American ragtime and jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer. Morton was jazz's first arranger, proving that a genre rooted in improvisation could retain its essential characteristics when notated. His composition "Jelly Roll Blues", published in 1915, was one of the first published jazz compositions. He also claimed to have invented the genre. Morton also wrote "King Porter Stomp", "Wolverine Blues", "Black Bottom Stomp", and "I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say", the last being a tribute to New Orleans musicians from the turn of the 20th century. Morton's claim to have invented jazz in 1902 was criticized.
