Kanpur Cantonment
Kanpur Cantonment (popularly referred to as Kanpur Cantt) is a military cantonment in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Kanpur Cantonment was established in the year 1811 and is situated on the right bank of river Ganges and is bound by Kanpur city area on the remaining three sides. Kanpur Cantonment is the largest cantonment in India, both by area and population. The area of the Cantonment is approx. 4243.0084 acres (17 km2) out of which the Bungalow Area is 3899.1784 acres and the Civil Area is 334.83 acres. As per 2011 Census, the population of Cantonment is 108,035 which is 453rd largest city of India (See the point 2 on external links). Nana Sahib
Nana Saheb Peshwa II (19 May 1824 – 24 September 1859), born as Dhondu Pant, was an Indian Peshwa of the Maratha empire, aristocrat and fighter, who led the rebellion in Kanpur (Cawnpore) during the Great Revolt of 1857. As the adopted son of the exiled Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao II, Nana Saheb believed that he was entitled to a pension from the East India Company, but the underlying contractual issues are rather murky. The Company's refusal to continue the pension after his father's death, as well as what he perceived as high-handed policies, led him to join the rebellion. He forced the British garrison in Kanpur to surrender, then murdered the survivors, gaining control of Kanpur for a few days. He later disappeared, after his forces were defeated by a British force that recaptured Kanpur. He later fled to Naimisha Forest in Nepal where he was said to have died in 1859. Kanpur Memorial Church
The Kanpur Memorial Church, originally known as the All Souls' Church, is a church located in Kanpur, India that belongs to the Church of North India, a united Protestant denomination. It was built in 1875 in honour of British valour during the Siege of Cawnpore in 1857. Location The church is situated on Albert Lane near Cawnpore Club in Kanpur Cantonment. It is situated in the heart of the cantonment. Architecture The church was designed by Walter Granville, architect of the East Bengal Railway. The complete church in Lombardic Gothic style is attractively executed in bright red brick with polychrome dressings. To the east of the church is the memorial garden which can only be approached through one gateway. It has a handsome carved Gothic screen designed by Henry Yule. Satti Chaura Ghat (''Satī Caurā Ghāţ'') or Massacre Ghat is a famous ghat in Kanpur, the industrial hub of Uttar Pradesh state in north India. Kanpur Civil Airport
Kanpur Civil Aerodrome is an aerodrome located inside Kanpur Cantonment and is 5 kilometres east of Kanpur city. It is used by small aircraft of the flying club of Kanpur, the DGCA, the local flying school and the NCC Air Wing. Incident and accidents On the morning of 18 May 1996, a 19-seater Archana Airways L-410 aircraft operating on the Delhi - Kanpur sector touched down late and could not be stopped within the available runway length, ending up beyond the runway. The aircraft hit the boundary wall of the airport and came to a halt. The aircraft sustained major damages, but there was no fire and no injury to persons on board the aircraft. Indian Rebellion Of 1857
The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a major uprising in India in 1857–58 against the rule of the British East India Company, which functioned as a sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown. The rebellion began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the Company's army in the garrison town of Meerut, northeast of Delhi. It then erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions chiefly in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, though incidents of revolt also occurred farther north and east.
