Kanku
''Kanku'' is a 1969 Gujarati social drama film, starring Kishore Bhatt, Kishore Jariwala, Pallavi Mehta, directed by Kantilal Rathod. The film was adapted from Pannalal Patel's short story of the same name. The film won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Gujarati at the 17th National Film Awards. Plot The film deals with struggles of a widow, Kanku (Pallavi Mehta). Production Gujarati writer Pannalal Patel had written a 20-pages long short story ''Kanku'' in 1936 for Diwali Special edition of ''Nav-Saurashtra'' magazine. Kantilal Rathod contacted him and convinced him to adapt it into film. Patel also helped him writing script and dialogues of the film. Soundtrack Release The film was released in theatres in 1969. The film was released on Home Video DVD by Moser Baer. It has shorter cut of 136 minutes, 12 minutes less than the original. Kantilal Rathod
Kantilal Rathod was an Indian film maker known for his work in Gujarati and Hindi cinema. He directed the 1969 Gujarati film ''Kanku'' which won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Gujarati at the 17th National Film Awards. Biography Born on 12 December 1924 in Raipur, India, Rathod grew up in Bengali atmosphere. He studied Art at Shantiniketan, and went to America to study Animation and Cartoon film at Art Institute of Chicago. He taught documentary film making and editing at Circus University, America during 1954-56. He made a short film ''Cloven Horizon'' about children's paintings for the same institute. The film was distributed by Encyclopædia Britannica. He briefly worked with Scottish Canadians animator and director Norman McLaren. He died on 28 September 1988. Pannalal Patel
Pannalal Nanalal Patel (7 May 1912 – 6 April 1989) was an Indian author known for his contributions in Gujarati literature. He wrote more than 20 short story collections, such as ''Sukhdukhna Sathi'' (1940) and ''Vatrakne Kanthe'' (1952), and more than 20 social novels, such as '' Malela Jeev'' (1941), '' Manvini Bhavai'' (1947) and ''Bhangyana Bheru'' (1957), and several mythological novels. He received the Jnanpith Award in 1985. Some of his works were translated as well as adapted into plays and films. Life He was born on 7 May 1912 in Mandli village (now in Dungarpur, Rajasthan) to Nanasha a.k.a. Nanalal and Hiraba, an Anjana Chaudhari family. He is youngest among his four siblings. Dilip Dholakia
Dilip Dholakia (15 October 1921 – 2 January 2011), often credited as D. Dilip or Diliprai in Hindi films, was an Indian music composer and singer. Born and educated in Junagadh, he was introduced to music in early life due to his family. Starting his career as singer, he assisted leading music composers of Bollywood and Gujarati cinema in 1960s and 1970s. He also composed music of eight Hindi as well as eleven Gujarati films. Gujarati cinema, also known as Gollywood or Dhollywood, is the Gujarati language film industry. It is one of the major regional and vernacular film industries of the cinema of India, having produced more than one thousand films since its inception. During the silent film era, many individuals in the industry were Gujarati people, Gujaratis. The language-associated industry dates back to 1932, when the first Gujarati talkie, ''Narsinh Mehta (1932 film), Narsinh Mehta'', was released. Until the independence of India in 1947, only twelve Gujarati films were produced. 17th National Film Awards
The 17th National Film Awards were presented by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India to facilitate the best of Indian cinema released in 1969. The ceremony took place at University Centenary Auditorium, Madras on 21 November 1970. At the 17th National Film Awards, a new award was introduced to honour the father of Indian cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, better known as Dadasaheb Phalke. Named the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, it was introduced to recognise the contribution of film personalities towards the development of Indian cinema. Venibhai Jamnadas Purohit (1916-1980) was Gujarati poet, lyricist, short story writer and journalist. Life Venibhai was born on 1 February 1916 in Jamkhambhaliya. He completed his primary education in Bombay and secondary education in Bombay. He joined ''Be Ghadi Moj'' for sometime in Bombay. He proof read in ''Prabhat'' daily, Bhartiya Sahitya Sangh and Sastu Sahitya in Ahmedabad from 1939 to 1942 . He participated in Quit India Movement in 1942 and was jailed for ten months.
