Kangaroo Records was an American record label established in 1958 in Houston, Texas by co-founders Henry Hayes and M.L. Young. It was an independent label and recorded at Gold Star Studio in Houston. The label debuted the work of musical artists Albert Collins and Joe "Guitar" Hughes, including the 1958 hit "The Freeze". Gold Star Records
Gold Star Records is an American independent record label, which was founded in 1941. Gold Star Recording Company and Gold Star Sound Services Gold Star Recording Company originated as a recording studio in Houston, Texas, and was founded in October 1941 by Bill Quinn under the name Quinn Recording Company. In 1950, Quinn changed the name of the studio to Gold Star Studios and, as such, remains the oldest registered recording studio in the Southeastern United States. The studio was important in launching the careers of such artists as Lightnin' Hopkins, Harry Choates, George Jones, The Big Bopper, Eddie Noack, The Sir Douglas Quintet, Roy Head, and Freddy Fender. At that time, the operation was renowned for inventive recording equipment and its reverberation chamber room. Quinn would also release several Cajun songs on his Opera label. Albert Collins
Albert Gene Drewery, known as Albert Collins and the Ice Man (October 1, 1932 – November 24, 1993),Skeely, Richard. He was noted for his powerful playing and his use of altered tunings and a capo. His long association with the Fender Telecaster led to the title "The Master of the Telecaster". Joe "Guitar" Hughes
Joe "Guitar" Hughes (born Maurice Hughes; September 29, 1937 – May 20, 2003) was an American blues musician from Houston, Texas. Career Hughes was inspired by Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Johnny "Guitar" Watson – "anyone who had fire in their playing and a good shuffle". His first band was the Dukes of Rhythm in the 1950s, which also included his friend Johnny Copeland. He worked with Little Richard and in Bobby Bland's band in the 1960s. He toured in Europe starting in the 1980s and released ''Texas Guitar Master'' on the Dutch label Double Trouble Records in 1986. The album included a live track with Hughes and fellow guitarist Pete Mayes. ''If You Want to See the Blues'' was released by Black Top Records in 1989. Hughes died of a heart attack on May 20, 2003. Alto Saxophone
The alto saxophone is a member of the saxophone family of woodwind instruments. Saxophones were invented by Belgian instrument designer Adolphe Sax in the 1840s and patented in 1846. The alto saxophone is pitched in E, smaller than the B tenor but larger than the B soprano. Third Ward, Houston
Third Ward is an area of Houston, Texas, United States, that evolved from one of the six historic wards of the same name. It is located in the southeast Houston management district. Third Ward, located inside the 610 Loop is immediately southeast of Downtown Houston and to the east of the Texas Medical Center. The ward became the center of Houston's African-American community.
