Kangarilla is a small rural town and locality around from Adelaide city centre, in South Australia. The area, formerly inhabited by Kaurna people, was settled by Europeans in 1840, not long after the British colonisation of South Australia. Today it lies within the City of Onkaparinga local government area, and has postcode 5157. At the , Kangarilla had a population of 896. History The land on which Kangarilla was settled by Europeans was formerly inhabited by the Kaurna people, who called it Kangkarrilla. Manning's Index reports that Norman Tindale thought that ''kanggarila'' may mean "birthplace", and that it was spelt "Kungirilla" in ''The South Australian'' on 17 March 1843. Ngarrindjeri man David Unaipon was recorded as saying that ''Kang'' means "two" and ''Ra'mulia'' means "outflow or water flowing", referring to two waterholes, but more recent sources have variously reported that the meaning in the Kaurna language is "a place where something is nurtured", and possibly " ... McLaren Flat, South Australia
McLaren Flat is a township in the McLaren Vale/Willunga basin south of Adelaide. McLaren Flat is on the sprawling flat land to the east of the town of McLaren Vale on the road to Kangarilla. At the 2016 census, the locality had a population of 1,537 of which 1,121 lived in its town centre. McLaren Flat is located within the McLaren Vale wine region. The area surrounding the town is planted to vineyards and several wineries are located in the immediate area. It has a population of 600. Clarendon, South Australia
Clarendon is a small town in the Adelaide Hills, about south of the Adelaide city centre and now regarded as an outer suburb of Adelaide. It lies within the City of Onkaparinga council area. The Clarendon Weir is located in the town area, on the Onkaparinga River. History The Kaurna people were the original inhabitants of the area. On 21 October 1840, Richard Blundell was granted the title to Section 801 of the Hundred of Noarlunga, after the area had been surveyed. In 1846 James Philcox purchased part of the section and subdivided it, selling the allotments and creating the town. In 1848, what remained of Section 801 was sold to Philcox's friend George Morphett, who later surveyed more allotments, and others added blocks adjacent to the town. City Of Onkaparinga
The City of Onkaparinga () is a local government area (LGA) located on the southern fringe of Adelaide, South Australia. It is named after the Onkaparinga River, whose name comes from ''Ngangkiparinga'', a Kaurna word meaning women's river. It is the largest LGA in South Australia, with a population of over 170,000 people in both urban and rural communities and is also geographically expansive, encompassing an area of 518.3 km². The council is headquartered in the Noarlunga Centre with area offices situated in Aberfoyle Park, Woodcroft and Willunga. Mylor, South Australia
Mylor (postcode 5153) is a small village in the Adelaide Hills. History Mylor was surveyed in 1885, with a plan to develop the land as a focal point for orchard development in South Australia. The town was proclaimed in 1891 by Acting Governor of South Australia Sir James Boucaut who named it after his Cornish birthplace of Mylor. Early inhabitants were strict Methodists, and due to their temperance belief no country pub was established, a quirk which has persisted into the current day. A church, school and a co-operative general store were among the early constructions of the town. Current Mylor retains a small village feel with a population of 939 (2006 census data). The Hundred of Kuitpo is a cadastral unit of hundred in the Adelaide Hills. It is one of the 11 hundreds of the County of Adelaide. It was named in 1846 by Governor Frederick Robe and is presumed to be derived from an indigenous term ''ku-it-po'', meaning reeds and referring to Blackfellow Creek in the contemporary locality of Yundi. Kaurna Language
Kaurna ( or ) is a Pama-Nyungan language historically spoken by the Kaurna peoples of the Adelaide Plains of South Australia. The Kaurna peoples are made up of various tribal clan groups, each with their own ''parnkarra'' district of land and local dialect. These dialects were historically spoken in the area bounded by Crystal Brook and Clare in the north, Cape Jervis in the south, and just over the Mount Lofty Ranges. Kaurna ceased to be spoken on an everyday basis in the 19th century and the last known native speaker, Ivaritji, died in 1929. Language revival efforts began in the 1980s, with the language now frequently used for ceremonial purposes, such as dual naming and welcome to country ceremonies. Classification R. M. W. Dixon (2002) classified Kaurna as a dialect of the Kadli language, along with Ngadjuri, Narungga, and Nukunu, and "Nantuwara", with ''kadli'' meaning "dog" in these varieties. David Unaipon
David Ngunaitponi (28 September 1872 – 7 February 1967), known as David Unaipon, was an Aboriginal Australian man of the Ngarrindjeri people. He was a preacher, inventor and author. Unaipon's contribution to Australian society helped to break many Aboriginal Australian stereotypes, and he is featured on the Australian $50 note in commemoration of his work. He was the son of preacher and writer James Unaipon. Biography Born at the Point McLeay Mission on the banks of Lake Alexandrina in the Coorong region of South Australia, Unaipon was the fourth of nine children of James and Nymbulda Ngunaitponi, of the Portaulun branch of the Ngarrindjeri people.
