Kandalama Reservoir
The Kandalama Reservoir (also erroneously known as the Kandalama Lake) is a reservoir in Kandalama, Sri Lanka. The reservoir is created by the high and wide Kandalama Dam. Water from the dam is used for irrigation purposes in the region, extending up to Kekirawa. The tank was created by constructing a dam across one of the main tributaries of Kala Wewa - the Mirisgoniya River. During 1952 to 1957, the tank was rehabilitated by Department of Irrigation of Sri Lanka. The reservoir and hotel is situated with the Kaludiya Pokuna Forest archeological site. The reservoir measures and at its longest length and width respectively, with a catchment area of and a volume of . Due to its scenic surroundings, and year-round water availability, the reservoir is a very popular tourist destination in Sri Lanka. Heritance Kandalama
Heritance Kandalama, ( si, හෙරිටන්ස් කණ්ඩලම) formerly known as the Kandalama Hotel, is a luxury five-star hotel in Kandalama, Sri Lanka, approximately south-east of Sigiriya. The hotel was built in 1991 and designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The hotel is owned and operated by Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings under its luxury hotel chain, Heritance Hotels and Resorts. Architecture The Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa designed the Kandalama Hotel which was built between 1992-95. The hotel's entrance lobby is situated at the terminus of a sloping long private road that branches north from a secondary arterial leading back to the centre of town. Tourism in Sri Lanka is growing rapidly. For centuries, Sri Lanka has been a popular place of attraction for foreign travelers. The Chinese traveler Fa-Hien visited Sri Lanka as early as the 410's AD/CE, and in the twelfth century, Italian explorer Marco Polo claimed Sri Lanka to be the "best island of its size in the world". Tourism The government initiatives in the development of tourism date back to 1937 when the Ceylon Tourist Bureau was established. However, it was closed down in September 1939 due to World War II. Kaludiya Pokuna Forest
Kaludiya Pokuna Archeological Forest Site (කළුදිය පොකුණ පුරාවිද්යා භූමිය), is a forest with archeological remains in Kandalama, in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka. The site has been handed over to the Girls' High School, Kandy in accordance with the "Urumaya Thani Nokaramu" program organized by the Department of Archeology. For the first time in Sri Lanka, a school was given custody of an archeological site. Etymology The place got its name from a pond that had dark water at ancient times.
