Kamouraska (provincial Electoral District)
Kamouraska was a provincial electoral district in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada. It was created for the 1867 Quebec general election, 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). It disappeared in the 1939 Quebec general election, 1939 election and its successor electoral district was Kamouraska-Rivière-du-Loup; however, Kamouraska-Rivière-du-Loup existed for only that one election and disappeared in 1944 Quebec general election, 1944, and was replaced by the re-created Kamouraska. Bas-Saint-Laurent
The Bas-Saint-Laurent (Lower Saint-Lawrence), is an administrative region of Quebec located along the south shore of the lower Saint Lawrence River in Quebec. The river widens at this place, later becoming a bay that discharges into the Atlantic Ocean and is often nicknamed ''"Bas-du-Fleuve"'' (Lower-River). The region is formed by eight regional county municipalities and 114 municipalities. In the south, it borders Maine of the United States, and the Canadian New Brunswick and the regions of Chaudière-Appalaches and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine. It had a population of 197,385 and a land area of as of the 2016 Census. The territory has evidence of human occupation since the Pleistocene by successive indigenous peoples. Charles-Antoine-Ernest Gagnon
Charles-Antoine-Ernest Gagnon (December 4, 1846 – June 11, 1901) was a notary, author and political figure in Québec. He represented Kamouraska in the Legislative Assembly of Québec from 1878 to 1890 as a Liberal. Louis Philippe Lizotte
Louis Philippe Lizotte (July 13, 1891 – May 18, 1972) was a Canadian political figure from Quebec. He was born in Saint-Pacôme, Quebec and was educated at Laval University where he earned a law degree. He was admitted to the Quebec bar in 1919 and became King's Counsel in 1927. Lizotte practiced law in Rivière-du-Loup until 1956 in partnership with provincial politician Léon Casgrain and senior federal cabinet minister Ernest Lapointe. He served as mayor of Rivière-du-Loup from 1935 until 1939 and was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Kamouraska in the 1940 federal election. Union Nationale (Quebec)
The Union nationale () was a conservative and nationalist provincial political party in Quebec, Canada, that identified with Québécois autonomism. It was created during the Great Depression and held power in Quebec from 1936 to 1939, and from 1944 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1970. The party was founded by Maurice Duplessis, who led it until his death in 1959. The party was often referred to in English as the National Union, especially when it was still an electoral force, by both the media and, at times, the party. René Chaloult
René Chaloult (January 26, 1901 – December 20, 1978) was a nationalist politician in Quebec, Canada. Background He was born on January 26, 1901, in Quebec City. Political career Chaloult first won a seat to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as a Union Nationale candidate in the 1936 election in the district of Kamouraska. In 1937, he and colleagues Oscar Drouin, Joseph-Ernest Grégoire, Philippe Hamel and Adolphe Marcoux left the Union Nationale. Chaloult joined the Liberals and won re-election in the 1939 election as the Member for the district of Lotbinière. During World War II, Chaloult opposed conscription. He won re-election as an Independent in Québec-Comté electoral district in the 1944 and 1948 elections, but was defeated in the 1952 election and in the district of Jonquière-Kénogami in the 1956 election. Charles-Adolphe Stein, (August 1, 1878 – February 27, 1938) was a Quebec politician, lawyer and judge. He was born in Quebec City to immigration agent Léonce Stein and Alma Baillairgé. Stein studied at the Quebec Seminary and at Laval University where he studied law and received the Governor General's Academic Medal in 1902. He was admitted to the Quebec bar that same year and became King's Counsel in 1912.
