Paul Kammerer (17 August 1880, in Vienna – 23 September 1926, in Puchberg am Schneeberg) was an Austrian biologist who studied and advocated Lamarckism, the theory that organisms may pass to their offspring characteristics acquired in their lifetime. Lucien Carr (March 1, 1925 – January 28, 2005) was a key member of the original New York City circle of the Beat Generation in the 1940s; later he worked for many years as an editor for United Press International. Early life Carr was born in New York City; his parents, Marion Howland (née Gratz) and Russell Carr, were both offspring of socially prominent St. Louis families. His maternal grandfather was Benjamin Gratz, a St. Louis capitalist who was engaged in the rope making business and was descended from Michael Gratz, who was among the first Jewish settlers of Philadelphia and was prominent in Philadelphia's social life. Zoltán Kammerer (born 10 March 1978) is a Hungarian sprint canoeist who has competed since the mid-1990s. Competing in five Summer Olympics, he won three gold medals (K-2 500 m: 2000, K-4 1000 m: 2000, 2004) and a silver medal (K-4 1000 m: 2012). Kammerer also twelve medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships with three golds (K-2 1000 m: 2006, K-4 500 m: 1997, K-4 1000 m: 1999), four silvers (K-2 500 m: 2009, K-2 1000 m: 2010, K-4 1000 m: 2001, 2003), and five bronzes (K-2 500 m: 2002, 2006, 2007; K-2 1000 m: 2007, K-4 500 m: 1999).
