Kamal El-Hajji
Mohammed Amal El-Hajji, known as Kamal El-Hajji, is a British Security Official and civil servant. From February 2016 to 2019 he was the Serjeant at Arms of the House of Commons, replacing Lawrence Ward. He had formerly been the Head of Front of House and VIP Relations at the Ministry of Justice headquarters, based at 102 Petty France. Career Since 2004, El-Hajji held a number of security and operational roles in the Department for Constitutional Affairs, and later the Ministry of Justice. From 2010 to 2015, he worked as the Head of Front of House and VIP Relations at the Ministry of Justice headquarters at 102 Petty France in London. Serjeant At Arms Of The House Of Commons (United Kingdom)
The Serjeant at Arms of the House of Commons is a parliamentary official responsible for order in the House of Commons. The office dates to 1415 and traditionally included responsibility for security. The role is now mainly ceremonial. The House of Lords also had a Serjeant-at-Arms (the title was often distinguished by the use of hyphens), dating also from the 15th century. His duties were merged in 1971 with those of Black Rod. Traditionally the post of Serjeant at Arms was filled by a retired military officer, but in 2008 a civil servant, Jill Pay, was selected as the first woman to hold the appointment. British Empire Medal
The British Empire Medal (BEM; formerly British Empire Medal for Meritorious Service) is a British and Commonwealth award for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. The current honour was created in 1922 to replace the original medal, which had been established in 1917 as part of the Order of the British Empire. Lawrence Ward (serjeant-at-arms)
Lawrence Ward (born 1968) is a former postman who started his professional career with Royal Mail. From 2012 to 2015, he was the Serjeant at Arms of the British House of Commons and as such was responsible for its security, access and maintaining order. Early life Ward was born in London in 1968. He left school at 15 to work in an electronics company. At 16, he joined the two-year Youth Training Scheme as a postal cadet at the Royal Mail. Career At 18, he joined the management programme of Royal Mail, and became a supervisor. In 1997, having progressed his career to Senior Management, Ward was appointed the 18th postmaster for the House of Commons. His responsibilities as Postmaster included overseeing postal services to Downing Street and managing the Court Postmaster at the Royal Household. Ugbana Oyet
Ugbana Oyet (born September 1976) is a Nigerian-born British chartered engineer and the current Serjeant at Arms of the House of Commons (United Kingdom), Serjeant-at-Arms of the House of Commons. Oyet is the first Black Serjeant-at-Arms. Early life Oyet was born in Nigeria in 1976 and moved to the United Kingdom with his family in 1991. Oyet was educated in Chichester, West Sussex. It was whilst at school in Chichester that he met Claire, his future wife. Oyet attended the University of Southampton, studying electrical engineering. Career Oyet began working at Parliament in 2012 as Parliament's Principal Electrical Engineer and led efforts to make the parliamentary estate Carbon neutrality, carbon neutral by 2050 before his appointment as Serjeant-at-Arms. John Bercow
John Simon Bercow (; born 19 January 1963) is a British former politician who was Speaker of the House of Commons from 2009 to 2019, and Member of Parliament (MP) for Buckingham between 1997 and 2019. A member of the Conservative Party prior to becoming Speaker, he was the first MP since Selwyn Lloyd in 1971 to be elected Speaker without having been a Deputy Speaker. After resigning as Speaker in 2019 and opting not to seek re-election as MP for Buckingham in the 2019 general election, Bercow left Parliament. 102 Petty France is an office block on Petty France in Westminster, London, overlooking St. James's Park, which was designed by Fitzroy Robinson & Partners, with Sir Basil Spence, and completed in 1976. The Department for Constitutional Affairs (DCA) was a United Kingdom government department. Its creation was announced on 12 June 2003; it took over the functions of the Lord Chancellor's Department. 2015 New Year Honours
The New Year Honours 2015 were appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by citizens of those countries.
