Kalyanavati Of Polonnaruwa
Kalyanavati was Queen regnant, Queen of Kingdom of Polonnaruwa, Polonnaruwa from 1202 to 1208. She was one of the few queens that reigned in Sri Lanka. She succeeded Sahassa Malla of Polonnaruwa, Sahassa Malla as Queen of Polonnaruwa and was succeeded by Dharmasoka of Polonnaruwa, Dharmasoka. She was the wife of Nissanka Malla of Polonnaruwa, Nissanka Malla. She was widowed in 1196. In 1202, the chief of the army, Ayasmanta, deposed king Sahassa Malla, and placed the dowager queen Kalyanavati on the throne in his stead. Her reign is described as a peaceful one. Ayasmanta managed the affairs of state in the her place, and during these years he founded the Sarajakula-vaddhana college at Weligama, and issued the treatise ''Dhammadhikarana'' ("Rules of Practice") concerning the rules of the caste system. Nissanka Malla ( si, නිස්සංක මල්ල), also known as Keerti Nissanka and Kalinga Lokesvara was a king of Polonnaruwa (Sri Lanka) who ruled the country from 1187 to 1196. He is known for his architectural constructions such as the Nissanka Lata Mandapaya, Hatadage and Rankot Vihara, as well as for the refurbishment of old temples and irrigation tanks. Nissanka Malla declared that only a Buddhist had the right to rule the country, thereby securing his position and justifying his claim for kingship. He spent large sums for various constructions and refurbishments, and also gave money to the public in an attempt to put down crimes.
