First Class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Saravanamuttu Trophy
The Major League Tournament (formerly known as the Premier Trophy) is the main domestic first-class cricket competition in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1938 and has existed under a number of different names. Matches before the 1988–89 season are not considered first-class. Relaunched as the Lakspray Trophy in 1988–89, it was renamed as the P. Saravanamuttu Trophy in 1990–91 and as the Premier Championship in 1998–99. There was a change of format in 2015–16 when it became the Premier League Tournament which was split into Tiers A and B the following year. The league was cancelled in 2020–21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then a new temporary tournament was introduced in 2021–22 called the National Super Provincial 4-Day Tournament. 2016–17 Premier League Tournament Tier B
The 2016–17 Premier League Tournament Tier B was the second division of the 29th season of first-class cricket in Sri Lanka's Premier Trophy. The tournament was contested by nine teams, starting on 2 December 2016 and concluding on 29 January 2017. Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club joined the division after they were relegated from the 2015–16 Premier League Tournament, 2015–16 Tier A tournament. Panadura Sports Club finished top of the table, but it was runners-up Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club who secured promotion to 2017–18 Premier League Tournament, Tier A due to a match-fixing scandal that resulted in the match between Panadura SC and Kalutara Physical Culture Club played on 23–25 January 2017 being declared null and void. Mahesh Hemantha
Mahesh Hemantha was a Sri Lankan cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman. Hemantha made his first-class debut during the Saravanamuttu Trophy competition of 1991–92, playing for Kalutara Physical Culture Centre. Hemantha's career began unsteadily, though in the last of his six matches for the team, in their only year of first-class cricket, he hit a career-best 163, which single-handedly accounted for nearly 70 percent of the total number of runs he scored in his entire first-class career – and the best first-class score for any Kalutara player. While Kalutara did not enter first-class cricket the following season, Hemantha switched teams to play for Antonians Sports Club. Louis Karunaratne
Louis Karunaratne was a Sri Lankan cricketer who played for Kalutara Physical Culture Centre. He made six first-class appearances for the team, during the Saravanamuttu Trophy competition of 1991–92. He took 3–59 with the ball in the first innings in which he bowled during his career.
