Kalitta Air Flight 207
Kalitta Air Flight 207 (K4207/CKS207) was a scheduled cargo flight between John F. Kennedy Airport to Bahrain International Airport with a technical stopover at Brussels. On May 25, 2008, the Boeing 747-200 overran runway 20 (later renumbered to 19) during takeoff at Brussels Airport, causing the aircraft to split into three large pieces. The occupants sustained minor injuries. Aircraft and crew The aircraft was a 27-year-old Boeing 747-209F registered as N704CK. The aircraft was built in July 1980 for China Airlines with the registration B-1894. It was re-registered as B-18752, operating for the same airline until the end of August 2003. It was purchased by Kalitta Air in September of the same year and registered as N704CK. The aircraft accumulated 108,560 flight hours with 20,599 flight cycles. Runway Safety Area
A runway safety area (RSA) or runway end safety area (RESA) is defined as "the surface surrounding the runway prepared or suitable for reducing the risk of damage to airplanes in the event of an undershoot, overshoot, or excursion from the runway." Past standards called for the RSA to extend only 60m (200 feet) from the ends of the runway. Currently the international standard ICAO requires a 90m (300 feet) RESA starting from the end of the runway strip (which itself is 60m from the end of the runway), and recommends but not requires a 240m RESA beyond that. Centurion Air Cargo Flight 164 was a chartered international cargo flight, flying from Bogota's El Dorado International Airport while en route to Miami International Airport. The flight was operated by Kalitta Air and the aircraft was wet leased by Centurion Air Cargo. On 7 July 2008, the aircraft, a Boeing 747-209BSF registered as N714CK, crashed shortly after takeoff. All aboard suffered injuries, but none were killed. Two people on the ground were killed after the plane slammed into a farm. The crash was the second crash of a Boeing 747 in 2008 in Kalitta Air service, after a previous accident at Brussels in May. An investigation was launched by Colombian authorities and concluded that the crash was caused by dual engine failures. During its take-off phase, engine #4 and then engine #1 suffered loss of power. Emery Worldwide Airlines Flight 17 was a regularly scheduled domestic cargo flight, flying from Reno to Dayton with an intermediate stopover at Rancho Cordova.
