Kalem, Mississippi
Kalem is a settlement in the central part of Scott County, Mississippi, United States, near Morton. Kalem was formed in 1911 from an old settlement called Concord. Kalem was a flag and water tank stop on the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. Kalem was noted for its corn, cotton, peanuts, sugarcane, potatoes, and other vegetables. Scott County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 28,264. Its county seat is Forest. The county is named for Abram M. Morton is a city in Scott County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,462 at the 2010 census. Geography Morton is surrounded by the Bienville National Forest. Roosevelt State Park is southwest of the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which are land and (0.59%) is water. Demographics 2020 census As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 3,711 people, 1,006 households, and 893 families residing in the city. 2010 census As of the 2010 census, there were 3,462 people, 1,133 households, and 797 families residing in the city. Yazoo And Mississippi Valley Railroad
The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad (Y&MV) was incorporated in 1882 and was part of the Illinois Central Railroad system (IC). Construction began in Jackson, Mississippi, and continued to Yazoo City, Mississippi. The line was later expanded through the Mississippi Delta and on to Memphis, Tennessee. In 1886, the IC purchased the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad. In 1892, the IC bought the Memphis to New Orleans line, forming the Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railway. These lines were merged into the Y&MV. Main lines included Memphis to New Orleans via Vicksburg and Baton Rouge, Memphis to Tutwiler, Clarksdale, MS to Yazoo City, Clarksdale to Jackson, MS, and Jackson to Natchez. Between 1945 and 1946, the IC began to absorb its subsidiaries. The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad ceased to operate as an independent railroad. The Kansas City Southern Railway Company is an American Class I railroad.
