The STS ''Kaisei'' (海星), meaning ''“Sea Star”'' in the Japanese language, is a steel-hulled brigantine designed by Polish naval architect Ryszard Langer. It was built as Schooner in Elbląg, Poland in 1987. After re-rigging it is now a two-masted vessel, square rigged on the foremast, with fore-and-aft sails on the mainmast. History Originally commissioned by the Polish Yachting Association as the ''Zew'', she was acquired by the Sail Training Association of Japan (STAJ) and delivered to Japan via the Panama Canal in 1993 following a 16-month maiden voyage under the United Nations flag in which she saw winds off the coast of Scotland and participated in the American Tall Ship Celebration in 1992. The Kaisei Academy (開成学園) is a preparatory private secondary school for boys located in the Arakawa ward of Tokyo, Japan. It was founded in 1871. Kaisei Ichirō
is a retired third generation Japanese Brazilian professional sumo wrestler (''rikishi'') from São Paulo, Brazil. Making his debut in September 2006, he reached the top ''makuuchi'' division in May 2011. His highest rank was ''sekiwake''. He was runner-up twice, once in the July 2013 tournament and another in the March 2018 tournament. He received three Fighting Spirit prizes. Early life and sumo background In his childhood, unlike his friends Sugano had no interest at all in football, not even watching games on TV. He was more interested in grappling sports, such as judo, which he practiced for a time. Project Kaisei (from 海星, ''kaisei'', "ocean planet" in Japanese) is a scientific and commercial mission to study and clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a large body of floating debris trapped in the Pacific Ocean by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. Discovered by NOAA, the patch is estimated to contain 20 times the density of floating debris compared to the global average. The project aims to study the extent and nature of the debris with a view to capturing, detoxifying, and recycling the material, and is organised by the Ocean Voyages Institute, a California-based 501c3 non-profit organisation dealing with marine preservation. The project is based in San Francisco and Hong Kong.
