KUCA (FM)
KUCA-FM (The Bear 91.3 FM) is the student-run radio station of the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in Conway, AR. History The then-Arkansas State Teachers College applied on May 7, 1966, to build a new noncommercial FM radio station which would operate with 10 watts on 91.5 MHz. A construction permit was granted on August 9, 1966, and two months later, KASC debuted as the second noncommercial radio station in Arkansas. It initially broadcast seven hours a day, six days a week. KASC was not the first radio station to be located at the college: the short-lived FM station KOWN and its successor KCON (1230 AM) were both housed at the Main Building, and the relocation of the latter allowed space for the establishment of a noncommercial outlet. The call letters were changed to KUCA in April 1975 after the then-State College of Arkansas was elevated to university status. Conway, Arkansas
Conway is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas and the county seat of Faulkner County, located in the state's most populous Metropolitan Statistical Area, Central Arkansas. Although considered a suburb of Little Rock, Conway is unusual in that the majority of its residents do not commute out of the city to work. The University of Central Arkansas (Central Arkansas or UCA) is a public university in Conway, Arkansas. Founded in 1907 as the Arkansas State Normal School, the university is one of the oldest in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As the state's only normal school at the time, UCA has historically been the primary source of teachers in Arkansas. UCA is noted for programs in nursing, education, physical therapy, business, performing arts, and psychology. FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio. KCON (AM)
KCON was a radio station broadcasting on 1230 kHz in Conway, Arkansas, United States. It operated from 1950 to 2007 and was last owned by the University of Central Arkansas (UCA). From 1950 to 1998, KCON was a private commercial station; under UCA management, it was operated by students. History Commercial years The Conway Broadcasting Company applied on April 10, 1948, for a new 250-watt radio station to serve Conway. After a comparative hearing, the Federal Communications Commission granted the application on July 26, 1950. From the first day of KCON's operation on November 13, 1950, the station had strong ties to the local Arkansas State Teachers College, today's UCA; the studios and transmitter were at the school's administration building. Easy listening (including mood music) is a popular music genre and radio format that was most popular during the 1950s to 1970s. It is related to middle-of-the-road (MOR) music and encompasses instrumental recordings of standards, hit songs, non-rock vocals and instrumental covers of selected popular rock songs. It mostly concentrates on music that pre-dates the rock and roll era, characteristically on music from the 1940s and 1950s.
