KSYC (AM)
KSYC (1490 AM) is a Jefferson Public Radio affiliate radio station based in Yreka, California. It is an affiliate of Jefferson Public Radio's "News & Information" service. History The station was founded and licensed on September 2, 1947, by the Siskiyou County Broadcasting Company and signed on the air as a country music station, which had been Yreka's radio staple for many years. On August 15, 1960, the station was sold to Northern Broadcasting Company and its format slowly evolved to one of "middle of the road", with polkas being heard regularly in the mid 1960s through early 1970s. From the mid-1960s until the mid-1970s, KSYC would play top 40 music during evening hours. The studio was located at the transmitter site, several blocks from downtown Yreka. Yreka ( ) is the county seat of Siskiyou County, California, United States, near the Shasta River; the city has an area of about , most of it land. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 7,807, reflecting a meager increase from 7,765 counted in the 2010 United States Census, 2010 Census. Yreka is home to the College of the Siskiyous, Klamath National Forest Interpretive Museum and the Siskiyou County Museum. History In March 1851, Abraham Thompson, a Mule train (transport), mule train packer, discovered gold near Rocky Gulch while traveling along the Siskiyou Trail from southern Oregon. KHWA (102.3 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station based in Mount Shasta, California (city of license is Weed, California), owned by Southern Oregon University and operated by Jefferson Public Radio, which also owned KSYC-FM in Yreka, California, Yreka. KHWA broadcast to the Siskiyou County and Redding markets, and had one of the largest geographical reaches of any FM station Northern California. The station last played an adult hits format. History The station first signed on the air in 1983 as KSQU, in Weed, California. It was later purchased in 1984 by Tom Erickson of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, moved to Mount Shasta and renamed KWHO. The station was one of two country music radio stations in Siskiyou County and the first to broadcast country music on the FM band in the market. The station is currently owned by Educational Media Foundation. History The station signed on the air in November 1977 as KEDY 95.3 in Mount Shasta, California, owned and operated by the Shasta Cascade Broadcasting Corporation, run by David Rees Sr. It came on the heels of the success of its sister station KWSD/620. The station was taken over by David's son, David Rees Jr. in the 1980s and had played various formats from adult standards to rock and was home to many great radio talents such as Fred "The Big Guy" Gerding Jr., Timothy "T. History The station, founded in 1947 by David Rees, Sr. of the Shasta Cascade Broadcasting Corporation, signed on the air June 12, 1947 as KWSD, broadcasting on 1340 kHz with 250 W of power. After the "K", the call letters originally stood for W (Weed) S (Shasta) D (Dunsmuir). The station aired various formats over the years, including rock, country and news talk.
