KGFX (1060 kHz) is a classic country-formatted commercial AM radio station, located in Pierre, South Dakota and owned by the James River Broadcasting Company. All four DRG Media Group (James River) stations in Pierre share studios at 214 West Pleasant Drive, and KGFX's transmitter site is located off U.S. Route 83 south of Pierre. The station operates with 10,000 watts during daylight hours, but because AM 1060 is a clear channel frequency with priority reserved for Class A stations KYW in Philadelphia and XEEP in Mexico City, KGFX must reduce power at night to 1,000 watts. Programming can also be heard on K276GT, an FM translator station at 103.1 MHz. KGFX's initial grant as a broadcasting station occurred in 1927, however the station traces its pre-history to a 1916 amateur radio station, giving it one of radio's longest historical records. History Located in territory that had long been occupied by the Lakota Sioux, Mobridge was founded by European Americans in 1906 following construction of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad through here. The town was named Mobridge for its railroad designation, a contracted form of Missouri Bridge, after the original railroad bridge over the Missouri River. The bridge was demolished by the Corps of Engineers in the early 1960s and replaced by a higher bridge due to the construction of the Oahe Dam. Lowry is a town in Walworth County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 10 at the 2020 census. The town is home to Lowry Pilgrim Community Church, Swan Creek Harness Shop, J & C Repair, Karst Service (closed in August 2015) and a fire station. Lowry also has an abandoned school, and a post office, which closed to service in the early 1970s. With the Missouri River and Swan Lake just a few miles away, and prime habitat for all sorts of wild game, Lowry is a destination for many hunters and fishermen year-round. Mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, pheasants, grouse, ducks, and geese are commonly hunted in the area. Walworth County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,315. Its county seat is Selby. The county was created in 1873 and organized in 1883. It is named for Walworth County, Wisconsin. Geography The Missouri River flows southward along the county's west boundary line. Swan Creek flows west-northwest through the county's SW corner, discharging into the Missouri. The county's terrain consists of semi-arid rolling hills, carved by drainages and gullies.
