KMJC-AM
KMJC (620 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a public radio format. Licensed to Mount Shasta, California, United States, the station is currently owned by Southern Oregon University. History The station, founded in 1947 by David Rees, Sr. of the Shasta Cascade Broadcasting Corporation, signed on the air June 12, 1947 as KWSD, broadcasting on 1340 kHz with 250 W of power. After the "K", the call letters originally stood for W (Weed) S (Shasta) D (Dunsmuir). The station aired various formats over the years, including rock, country and news talk. Rees had previously spent two decades with KMED in Medford, Oregon. KWSD was the only station in the Mt. Shasta market until 1976, when a companion FM station, KEDY, went on the air. Medford, Oregon
Medford is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Oregon, in the United States. As of the 2020 United States Census on April 1, 2020, the city had a total population of 85,824 and a metropolitan area population of 223,259, making the Medford MSA the fourth largest metro area in Oregon. The city was named in 1883 by David Loring, civil engineer and right-of-way agent for the Oregon and California Railroad, after Medford, Massachusetts, which was near Loring's hometown of Concord, Massachusetts. Southern Oregon
Southern Oregon is a region of the U.S. state of Oregon south of Lane County and generally west of the Cascade Range, excluding the southern Oregon Coast. Northern California
Northern California (colloquially known as NorCal) is a geographic and cultural region that generally comprises the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. Jefferson Public Radio
Jefferson Public Radio (JPR) is a regional public radio broadcasting network serving over a million potential listeners in Southern Oregon and the Shasta Cascade region of northern California. Owned by Southern Oregon University, the network is headquartered on the SOU campus in Ashland, near Medford. It is named after the proposed State of Jefferson, an area which roughly corresponds to its vast and mostly mountainous coverage area of . JPR's flagship station, KSOR in Ashland, signed on in April 1969 as a 10-watt station operated by students at what was then Southern Oregon College. It began moving away from its college radio roots during the 1970s, becoming a full NPR member by the end of the decade. KHWA (102.3 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station based in Mount Shasta, California (city of license is Weed, California), owned by Southern Oregon University and operated by Jefferson Public Radio, which also owned KSYC-FM in Yreka, California, Yreka. KHWA broadcast to the Siskiyou County and Redding markets, and had one of the largest geographical reaches of any FM station Northern California. The station last played an adult hits format. KSYC (1490 AM) is a Jefferson Public Radio affiliate radio station based in Yreka, California. It is an affiliate of Jefferson Public Radio's "News & Information" service. History The station was founded and licensed on September 2, 1947, by the Siskiyou County Broadcasting Company and signed on the air as a country music station, which had been Yreka's radio staple for many years. On August 15, 1960, the station was sold to Northern Broadcasting Company and its format slowly evolved to one of "middle of the road", with polkas being heard regularly in the mid 1960s through early 1970s. From the mid-1960s until the mid-1970s, KSYC would play top 40 music during evening hours. The studio was located at the transmitter site, several blocks from downtown Yreka. The station is currently owned by Educational Media Foundation. History The station signed on the air in November 1977 as KEDY 95.3 in Mount Shasta, California, owned and operated by the Shasta Cascade Broadcasting Corporation, run by David Rees Sr. It came on the heels of the success of its sister station KWSD/620.
