FM Broadcasting
FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio. FM broadcasting is capable of higher fidelity—that is, more accurate reproduction of the original program sound—than other broadcasting technologies, such as AM broadcasting. KLHC (1350 AM) is a multicultural radio station licensed to serve Bakersfield, California which broadcast a Punjabi format. 1350 AM simulcasts on KIID 1470 AM in Sacramento, KWRU 1300 AM in Fresno, and KOBO 1450 AM in Yuba City. Since 2005 the Punjabi/Indian community has increased significantly in Bakersfield. Punjabi-Americans are in trucking and small business in big numbers. KISV (94.1 FM, "HOT 94.1") is a Rhythmic Top 40 music formatted radio station based in Bakersfield, California. The American General Media outlet broadcasts with an ERP of 4.5 kW. Its studios are located at the Easton Business Complex in southwest Bakersfield, and its transmitter is located east of the city. History The station signed on the air in 1948 as KERN-FM. It was well known in the 1980s as KQXR or Q94 FM. At that time it had a Top 40 format that leaned towards adult contemporary. After taking a beating from then-rhythmic KKXX 105.3FM, the call letters were changed in 1989 to KERN-FM (94 Oldies), along with the format. For the next eight years the station supported an oldies format, specializing in Top 40 music from the years 1955-1974 and featuring syndicated shows such as "Cruisin' America with Cousin Brucie" and "Dick Clark's Rock, Roll & Remember." KSNY-FM (101.5 FM, "Big Star") is the companion station to KSNY (AM). The station began in 1980 at 101.7 MHz as 'FM-102' with an easy listening format. The station was automated in the beginning until its move to 101.5 and the format change to country. The station now has coverage in the Big Spring and Abilene markets. In 2001, KSNY began a sister station, 98.9 KLYD "Real Rock." but it was automated until 2003. KSNY (AM)
KSNY (1450 AM, "The Zone") is the first radio station to air in Snyder, Texas. Before the advent of FM as a mainstream medium, KSNY adopted a block format, meaning different formats at different times of the day. In the 1970s, KSNY started the day with News and Talk, then in the mornings played country music, in the afternoons Adult Contemporary, and at night Top 40 formats. A Latin format with a Spanish-speaking announcer aired on Sunday evenings until 1980, and then moved to weeknights from 6—7 pm. The station also played Easy Listening and Gospel formats on Sunday mornings. KSNY was an affiliate of the Texas State Network, and most of its newscasts mirrored television airings (noon, 6:00, and 10:00).
