KHWA (102.3 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station based in Mount Shasta, California (city of license is Weed, California), owned by Southern Oregon University and operated by Jefferson Public Radio, which also owned KSYC-FM in Yreka, California, Yreka. KHWA broadcast to the Siskiyou County and Redding markets, and had one of the largest geographical reaches of any FM station Northern California. The station last played an adult hits format. History The station first signed on the air in 1983 as KSQU, in Weed, California. It was later purchased in 1984 by Tom Erickson of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, moved to Mount Shasta and renamed KWHO. The station was one of two country music radio stations in Siskiyou County and the first to broadcast country music on the FM band in the market. Weed is a city in Siskiyou County, California, United States. As of the 2020 Census, the city had a total population of 2,862, down from 2,967 in 2010. There are several unincorporated communities adjacent to, or just outside, Weed proper, including Edgewood, Carrick, and Lake Shastina. These communities generally have mailing addresses that use Weed or its ZIP code. KSYC (1490 AM) is a Jefferson Public Radio affiliate radio station based in Yreka, California. It is an affiliate of Jefferson Public Radio's "News & Information" service. History The station was founded and licensed on September 2, 1947, by the Siskiyou County Broadcasting Company and signed on the air as a country music station, which had been Yreka's radio staple for many years. On August 15, 1960, the station was sold to Northern Broadcasting Company and its format slowly evolved to one of "middle of the road", with polkas being heard regularly in the mid 1960s through early 1970s. KMJC (620 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a public radio format. Licensed to Mount Shasta, California, United States, the station is currently owned by Southern Oregon University. History The station, founded in 1947 by David Rees, Sr. of the Shasta Cascade Broadcasting Corporation, signed on the air June 12, 1947 as KWSD, broadcasting on 1340 kHz with 250 W of power. After the "K", the call letters originally stood for W (Weed) S (Shasta) D (Dunsmuir). The station aired various formats over the years, including rock, country and news talk. The station is currently owned by Educational Media Foundation. History The station signed on the air in November 1977 as KEDY 95.3 in Mount Shasta, California, owned and operated by the Shasta Cascade Broadcasting Corporation, run by David Rees Sr. It came on the heels of the success of its sister station KWSD/620. Jefferson Public Radio (JPR) is a regional public radio broadcasting network serving over a million potential listeners in Southern Oregon and the Shasta Cascade region of northern California. Owned by Southern Oregon University, the network is headquartered on the SOU campus in Ashland, near Medford. It is named after the proposed State of Jefferson, an area which roughly corresponds to its vast and mostly mountainous coverage area of . Local Marketing Agreement
In North American broadcasting, a local marketing agreement (LMA), or local management agreement, is a contract in which one company agrees to operate a radio or television station owned by another party. In essence, it is a sort of lease or time-buy. Under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, a local marketing agreement must give the company operating the station (the "senior" partner) under the agreement control over the entire facilities of the station, including the finances, personnel and programming of the station. Its original licensee (the "junior" partner) still remains legally responsible for the station and its operations, such as compliance with relevant regulations regarding content.
