KYOK (1140 AM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Conroe, Texas, and serving Greater Houston. It is currently owned by Salt of the Earth Broadcasting and airs an urban contemporary gospel radio format. KYOK broadcasts at 5,000 watts by day, using a directional antenna with its transmitter off Bryant Road in Conroe. But because AM 1140 is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A XEMR Monterrey, Mexico, and WRVA Richmond, Virginia, KYOK is a daytimer, required to go off the air at sunset to avoid interference. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands.
