The station is currently owned by Salt & Light Radio, Inc. Former owners Journal Broadcast Group announced July 22, 2009 that KGEM, along with sister station KCID, were to be sold to Salt & Light Radio for $950,000. The sale closed on September 25, 2009, and as a result the stations were converted to Salt & Light's local Catholic radio format (see Salt + Light Television). Journal Media Group (formerly Journal Communications) was a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based newspaper publishing company. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands. The earliest experimental AM transmissions began in the early 1900s. However, widespread AM broadcasting was not established until the 1920s, following the development of vacuum tube receivers and transmitters. Salt + Light Television is a Canadian multi-lingual Category B television channel owned by the not-for-profit Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation and based in Toronto, Ontario.
