The KFCF (88.1 FM) is an American radio station broadcasting a community radio format. Licensed to Fresno, California, the station is currently owned by the Fresno Free College Foundation. KFCF gets over 85% of its programming from KPFA in Berkeley. History The KFCF began broadcasting on June 9, 1975, and was patterned after KPFA and Pacifica Radio's mission of being listener-sponsored and not influenced by corporate advertisers or government funding. It was designed to be the educational electronic media in the Valley, devoted to alternative programming with a strong commitment to peace and justice. The KFCF became a project of the Fresno Free College Foundation in 1972. At that time, Alex Vavoulis was its president. Other Board members were Douglas C. Pacifica Foundation is an American non-profit organization that owns five independently operated, non-commercial, listener-supported radio stations known for their progressive/liberal political orientation. Its national headquarters adjoins station KPFK in Los Angeles, California. KPFA (94.1 FM) is an American listener-funded talk radio and music radio station located in Berkeley, California, broadcasting to the San Francisco Bay Area. KPFA airs public news, public affairs, talk, and music programming. The station signed on the air April 15, 1949, as the first Pacifica Radio station and remains the flagship station of the Pacifica Radio Network. The station's studios are located in Downtown Berkeley, and the transmitter site is located in the Berkeley Hills. The year 1975 saw a number of significant events in radio broadcasting history. Events *1 January: KQV-Pittsburgh's new owner, Taft Broadcasting, hires Joey Reynolds as program director. KQV's Top 40 format is blown up, taking a bizarre, free-form approach dubbed "The Death of Radio!" Phonetically re-branded "Kay-Cue-Vee," regular newscasts are canceled, jingles are replaced with crudely produced "mingles," airplay of ''any'' Top 10 songs was avoided, daily names like "Barrel Bottom Radio," "Volkswagen Radio," "Channel 14," "AM Radio" and "Normalcy Radio" are used, and all of the deejays ''only'' said "KQV plays WAY too Much Music!" for a seven-day period, among other stunting (broadcasting), stunts. FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio.
