Curt Ernst Carl Schumacher, better known as Kurt Schumacher (13 October 1895 – 20 August 1952), was a German politician who became chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany from 1946 and the first Leader of the Opposition in the West German Bundestag in 1949; he served in both positions until his death. An opponent of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's government but an even stronger opponent of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany in East Germany, he was one of the founding fathers of postwar German democracy. He was an opponent of reactionary and revolutionary forces, the Nazi Party and the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during the Weimar Republic and described the KPD as "red-painted Nazis". Kurt Schumacher (6 May 1905 – 22 December 1942) was a German sculptor and Communist member of the German Resistance fighter who was a member of the anti-fascist resistance group that was later called the Red Orchestra by the Gestapo. Marcel Cordes (born Kurt Schumacher, 11 March 1920 – 26 November 1992) was a German baritone in opera and concert. He was regarded as a leading baritone of German origin for Italian opera in the 1950s and 1960s. He appeared at major opera houses in Europe, and made recordings of complete operas and excerpts, including in 1956 the first complete recording of Carl Orff's ''Die Kluge''. Career Born Kurt Schumacher in Stelzenberg, he studied at the conservatory in Kaiserslautern from age 16, three years later on a scholarship at the Musikhochschule Mannheim. He made his operatic debut as a tenor at the municipal theatre of Eger in 1941, in the title role Canio in the German language rendition of Leoncavallo's ''Pagliacci''—Der Bajazzo.
